This Earth Day, Discover the Sustainable Productions Behind Our Films and Series

At Netflix, we help tell stories our members will love. To bring these stories to life, we're modernizing the ways our films and series are powered by trading fossil fuels for clean technology like mobile batteries, hydrogen power units and solar.

Since 2023, every scripted Netflix-managed production has integrated some form of clean mobile power or electric vehicles. From hydrogen power units on Bridgerton and electric vehicles on Virgin River, to solar battery systems on Stranger Things and renewable energy microgrids on Ransom Canyon, we're bringing exciting innovations to our productions, and the industry, while working to reach our climate targets.

This Earth Day, we're spotlighting the behind-the-camera progress powering your favorite series and films:

The Diplomat Season 3 (out now)

The award-winning political drama starring Keri Russell is our first production to use hydrogen power units for three consecutive seasons. We deployed this tech in rural locations throughout the UK, replacing multiple diesel generators at each deployment. With no exhaust emitted, the only byproduct was heat and drinkable water.

ONE PIECE: Into the Grand Line (out now)

Monkey D. Luffy and his behind-the-scenes crew harnessed the power of the sun to reduce their reliance on diesel generators, leading to industry-first innovations like creating the first solar-powered battery hybrid system in South Africa, inclusive of solar panels and batteries that powered basecamp. ONE PIECE: Into the Grand Line proved that solar can provide clean, quiet, and reliable energy, so much so that we've since expanded our use of this tech for the forthcoming third season.

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man (out now)

From the award-winning six-season saga, this film reduced overall generator fuel by nearly 40% through tech such as hydrogen power units and hybrid battery systems. The trailer-based hydrogen power units were deployed across four locations over the course of 24 days, providing power for catering and unit bases. This production and crew transitioned to clean power across various filming locations in the UK including Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, London, Cumbria and Wales.

APEX (on Netflix April 24)

The new survivalist thriller starring Charlize Theron and Taron Edgerton is the first production in Australia to use a hydrogen power unit. The tech powered the entire unit basecamp and helped production reduce its diesel generator fuel usage by over 50%.

Nemesis (on Netflix May 14)

This upcoming crime drama deployed clean mobile power for a variety of use cases, contributing to a 40% reduction in the production's overall need for diesel generator fuel. A large mobile battery became the only source of power for set lighting on multiple filming days, and production also regularly utilized small batteries and solar trailers. For transportation, the Los Angeles-based production used two electric Shorty 40 trucks and electric passenger vans.

The Boroughs (on Netflix May 21)

The new adventure-mystery series from executive producers The Duffer Brothers was filmed in New Mexico, including our state-of-the-art studios in Albuquerque, where production incorporated mobile batteries, solar trailers and solar battery systems to power the set. Building off the success of nearby production Ransom Canyon, The Boroughs cut their reliance on diesel generator fuel usage by over 75% (that's almost 13,000 gallons of fuel we didn't end up having to use). The show was also the first to use electric Shorty 40's, a new all-electric box truck built for film productions like ours, along with electric and hybrid vehicles. Thanks to these measures, showrunners Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews were honored with The Hollywood Reporter's Achievement in Sustainable Production award.
