Garmin uses CSR s COACH4 for new action cameras

Garmin has chosen CSR's COACH14 Digital Video Processor for its debut line of action cameras. Garmin's water-resistant VIRB and VIRB Elite, launched in August, enable users to capture HD 1080p video in challenging environments.

This is our first premium action camera series and we wanted to make as big an impact on the market as possible, said Dan Bartel, VP Worldwide Sales at Garmin. By including CSR's COACH technology we know customers will get the high-quality video they desire. We've worked with CSR for a number of years and their advanced technology always enables us to differentiate our products from the competition.

COACH14 includes proprietary Digital Video Stabilisation (DVS) technology which compensates for shakiness without the need for a gyro, allowing for steady footage even in extreme situations such as snowboarding or mountain biking. It also includes noise reduction capabilities for shooting in low-light conditions, advanced colour reproduction and improved dynamic range behaviour.

COACH14 internal lens correction capabilities enable VIRB users to choose either a wide-angle fish-eye look or undistorted video. COACH14 also delivers stills processing capabilities, with images taken via the VIRBs 16 megapixel camera. Still features include photo burst, time lapse options and stills photography while recording video.

The action camera market is booming with over thirteen million units predicted to be shipped by 2016, says Slava Barabash, VP of Imaging Products at CSR. By using COACH14, which cuts out gyros, Garmin has been able to lower manufacturing costs while still ensuring the VIRB will be able to capture high quality, full HD detail, whatever the conditions. This ensures consumers get the best combination of quality and cost.
