SBS APPOINTS DIRECTOR OF NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS

SBS has appointed Jim Carroll as its new Director of News and Current Affairs.

He replaces outgoing Director of News and Current Affairs, Paul Cutler who will retire at the end of June. For the past three months Carroll has been SBS's Executive Producer of World News Australia.

Carroll brings a wealth of experience in news and current affairs across Australia's commercial television and radio networks. He is a recognised industry leader in delivery of news, current affairs, documentary and sports programming.

Prior to SBS, Carroll served for 11 years at Network Ten where he led the news and public affairs divisions until 2011, re-establishing Ten's reputation as a quality news and current affairs broadcaster culminating in three prestigious Walkley Award nominations that year, an unprecedented achievement for the Network.

Carroll has also been a senior news and current affairs executive at the Nine and Seven Networks, produced award winning, news, current affairs and documentary-based programs, helped guide the careers of some of Australia's most prominent journalists and presenters and consulted to major media organisations.

I thank Paul Cutler for his outstanding contribution to SBS during his eight years here which is the culmination of an extremely distinguished media career both in Australia and internationally.

Paul has steered the SBS news and current affairs team through a period of great change and challenge for the media sector, cementing our reputation for high-quality and in-depth journalism. In particular, he has guided many young journalists on to successful careers at SBS and other organisations, and will be missed at SBS.

On his appointment Carroll said: It is an honour to lead the SBS news and current affairs team through this evolutionary time for media.

We are expanding the reach and impact of our services with innovative and enriching news and current affairs content across platforms and devices to meet our audience's changing needs and expectations and, of course, providing the unique insight into world events that only SBS can.

SBS will undertake a recruitment process for the position of Executive Producer of World News Australia.

Carroll will also continue in his voluntary roles as a director of the Australia Science Media Centre and a member of the Australia Day Council NSW.
