Dialogue drives workflow

Presented as a core technology demonstration at NAB, Nexidia provides a remarkable tool to derive practical metadata from the soundtrack of existing audio. Each file is catalogued to create what is described as an index of the soundtrack. Subsequently, this can be searched by typing in keywords which the system converts to audio and matches against the index.

In the demonstrations it proved remarkably effective at finding spoken words and phrases, and also at creating associations, such as where a speaker might talk around multiple search terms within a set space of time, allowing a researcher to identify when someone is talking about a complex topic. The system runs on Windows Server, and creating the index is at about 40 times real time per processor core allocated to the task, with an effectively unlimited capacity.

Applications include the ability to search news archives for relevant content. In this case, the Nexidia standalone system simply adds markers to the video files and hands them over to the editing system, allowing the journalist to jump straight to the section to be used.

Nexidia also offers the technology to other vendors to package. Boris FX offers a Quicktime search tool, Boris Soundbite, and Softel (now part of Miranda, in turn part of Belden) assists subtitlers by automatically timing in and out points in ReSync TiGo, which is powered by Nexidia technology.

Wohler is using the technology to provide captioning QC, by using Nexidia to determine the language of the soundtrack, comparing that with the content metadata, and ensuring that the correct subtitle file is associated with it. The Nexidia technology can potentially work in any language, requiring only about 20 to 40 hours of clean content to learn a new language.
