NITV celebrates NAIDOC Week across the schedule
Monday 15 June 2015
Media Release
News on the Road, exclusive Living Black interview with the Spiritual Leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama and live digital coverage of NAIDOC Award Winners
NITV is marking NAIDOC Week with a dedicated schedule of programming between 6-12 July. In addition to NITV News on the Road, Living Black's Karla Grant speaks exclusively to the Dalai Lama and NITV Online will deliver extensive live digital coverage of all the winner action from the NAIDOC Awards.
Tanya Denning-Orman, NITV Channel Manager says: This week is an opportunity for Australians to celebrate Indigenous contribution and acknowledge the determination of our First Peoples in the spirit of NAIDOC. NITV will be reflecting and celebrating throughout its programming across the week; we are especially looking forward to broadcasting our News from South Australian communities and using our digital platforms to bring audiences all the live winner action from the NAIDOC Awards.
NITV News will head to South Australia to broadcast from Ceduna, Marla and Adelaide (Monday 6-Thursday 9 July, 9pm), with dedicated reporting on the closure of South Australian Indigenous communities, the Nuclear Royal Commission and imprisonment rates in the state, in addition to national NAIDOC stories from across Australia throughout the week. Malarndirri McCarthy will present Week in Review from Adelaide (Friday 10 July, 1pm, SBS, repeated Saturday 11 and Sunday 12, 12pm and 5.30pm, NITV) and presenters Natalie Ahmat and Kris Flanders bring NITV News live from the NAIDOC Awards (Friday 10 July, 9.30pm) to report on all the night's events.
In a special Living Black, Karla Grant speaks to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama as he makes his historic first visit to Uluru. The Spiritual Leader of Tibet met with the Anangu, the traditional owners of the land, sharing stories and experiences of a common history. In this exclusive interview, the Dalai Lama talks about the importance of modernisation, whilst still maintaining Indigenous language and culture.
In collaboration with the South Australian Film Corporation and Media Resource Centre, NITV will broadcast a series of micro-documentaries across the week, which are all focused on the national NAIDOC theme - We All Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate. Produced by South Australian Indigenous filmmakers, the series features stories about language, culture and Elders.
NITV will celebrate the 2015 NAIDOC Awards with a twist this year with the winners being shared live through the channel's digital platforms. From 7pm on Friday 10 July, NITV Online will follow all the winners' action through a range of multimedia content released as they are announced, including the winner's speech, photos and intimate short documentaries on their individual stories. The online coverage of the Awards will be followed up by a full two-hour highlights programme (Sunday 19 July, 7.30pm), which will include comedic sensation Steven Oliver, country music legend Glenn Skuthorpe and both the opening ceremony and closing ceremonies.
There will also be a selection of first run and classic Indigenous Australian content broadcast throughout the week. Mparntwe: Sacred Sites (Tuesday 7 July, 7.30pm) looks at the sacred sites in and around Mparntwe in central Australia, and the struggle of the Arrernte people to identify, document and preserve these sites in the face of urban expansion, Takeover (Thursday 9 July, 7.30pm), a documentary that observes the profound effect on an Aboriginal community of political and bureaucratic decisions, The House Opening (Friday 10 July, 8pm), which, following the death of her husband, documents the preparations by Geraldine Kawanka for a house-opening ceremony, creatively mingling Aboriginal, Torres Strait and European traditions in order to deal with death in the context of new living patterns in the Aboriginal community of Aurukun, on the Cape York Peninsula, and Radiance (Sunday 12 July, 9.30pm), which sees three sisters reunite after some years apart, for their mothers funeral.
