Edgeware Consolidates Video Delivery with Unified Caching and Software Defined Networking

New version of D-VDN Solution includes unified caching to legacy and new device types with cloud-based control and management

London - March 18, 2014 - TV Connect Stand 73 - Edgeware, the technology leader in distributed video delivery, today announced availability of a new version of the Edgeware Distributed Video Delivery Network (D-VDN) Solution. The latest release provides consolidated delivery of existing and on-demand services to both legacy set top boxes (STBs) and new multiscreen devices through the new Orbit Unified Server Software. The D-VDN now also includes the latest version of Edgeware's Convoy Management Software, which enables operators to build their own content delivery networks (CDNs) using a software defined networking (SDN) approach.

Most cable and telecom operators have a large install base of STBs connected via legacy networks, such as QAM tuners. Rather than building duplicate, siloed delivery networks for existing and new, on-demand services to these devices and the latest multiscreen clients on broadband networks, Edgewares latest D-VDN Solution enables consolidation to a single, unified delivery network. Servers and control software can record, cache and deliver content to both device types.

At TV Connect, Edgeware is demoing the Orbit Unified Server Software running on two hardware platforms. In addition to Edgeware's existing Orbit 3020 hardware platform, this includes Edgeware's latest Orbit 3080 platform, providing up to 80Gbps aggregate throughput per rack unit to both networks from a single set of caching servers. Edgeware's Convoy Software provides all control and management for both delivery types from a single, virtualized application running in a shared data-center or private cloud. By creating a centralized, logical view of all network resources, this SDN architecture enables operators to dynamically provision capacity and to optimize video session routing for the highest-possible quality of experience (QoE) regardless of any rapid change in the mix of video services. A key example for prioritizing is live streaming to premium sports customers.

Service providers can't afford to duplicate their delivery networks as they strive to offer compelling, on-demand services at increasingly competitive prices, said Jon Haley, vice president, marketing and business development at Edgeware.
