RT eliminates single use plastics from Restaurant Operations

Director-General Dee Forbes joined Eileen Duggan today, along with Labhaoise Sherlock, Baxter Storey Manager, John Gormley, Member of the RT Green Broadcaster Advisory Group and Eimear Kellett of Focus Ireland, as the main canteen, and all RTE facilities, brings the use of single-use plastics to an end. In line with RT 's Environmental Policy and the targets of RTE s award-winning sustainability programme, the second phase of the plan to eliminate single-use plastics from restaurant operations commenced today, Monday 18 June.

Eimear Kellett of Focus Ireland was presented with a cheque, the profits from the sale of the recently launched reusable cups. From today, all single-use plastics are being replaced with compostable or renewable alternatives. To accommodate this significant development, the cost of the compostable will be passed on.

Dee Forbes says: "The impact of single-use plastic on our environment and indeed our health is well documented. I'm delighted that RT is leading the way in this area, and I know we will all support this constructive change. Staff have been at the forefront of this initiative, and your support is very much appreciated."

Compostable suppliers Zeusfood were on hand today in the main canteen to answer any questions on the new compostable packaging which will decompose in less that 12 weeks.

Phase one, which saw the introduction of a branded "keep cup", was successful in reducing single-use cups for beverages, and staff are benefiting from the discounts applied when using these or indeed their own personal cups.

Tariff increases are shown in the attached and are directly linked to compostable replacement. There will be an increase in the availability of delph and cutlery, but it cannot leave the restaurant or its availability will be compromised.
