RAVENNA dives deep into ST 2110 with Genelec, Lawo & Meinberg posted: 29/06/2019

RAVENNA, along with RAVENNA community members, Genelec, Lawo and Meinberg recently hosted a sold-out educational event in London on the topic of SMPTE ST 2110 and related standards and best practices.

The day-long seminar provided an overview on the SMPTE ST 2110 Standard for Media Transport over Managed IP Networks with a focus on the underlying principles of synchronization and transport of audio and video essence. Special attention was paid to the video aspects and audio transport and routing functionality. There was a separate session covering SMPTE ST2059 plus an outlook on the upcoming IEEE 1588 (PTP) V2.1 Standard revision. An overview on current and upcoming NMOS specifications completed the educational part. An overview on some recent project activities and an animated discussion on applicability of ST2110 and NMOS specifications concluded the day (not counting the spontaneous gathering over a round of ice-cold beer at a nearby pub).

According to Chris Hollebone from Merging Technologies who attended the seminar, the event was a great success. It was a really informative day that explained the certainties of ST 2110 and the less certain progress of NMOS. Presentations were of a consistently high standard with some lively discussion. Extremely valuable.

Andreas Hildebrand, RAVENNA evangelist and audio networking expert, was one of the presenters. I've always felt that education is key to improving services, particularly in the complex and rapidly evolving world of IP networks and workflows. Anything we can do from our side to further that has to be a good thing. In fact, the day was so successful that we are already fielding demands for a repeat performance. We'll doubtless be hosting another event during the autumn, hopefully in a larger venue where we can accommodate more people as the demand is clearly there. Watch this space.
