Trompie film restoration initiative to premiere at the kykNet Silwerskermfees

Trompie, the only feature film ever made from the highly popular series of Afrikaans books by Topsy Smith will be seen for the first time in 40 years on the 30th August as part of the official selection in the kykNET Silwerskermfees at the The Bay Hotel.

Originally released in 1974 (a year before the first TV broadcast in South Africa) in the drive-in and school network across South Africa, the film was written, produced and directed by Tonie van der Merwe, who recently was awarded one of four Heroes and Legends Award at the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Film Awards, hosted by the KZN Film Commission, for his contribution to the development of the film industry.

The film is based on the very first book in the series and starred Andre Laubscher as Trompie. The story follows Trompie and his mischievous boksombende gang as they embark on a number of adventures. Mr Laubscher today is a medical doctor in the town of Ceres in the Western Cape.

Trompie is the second film from Gravel Road Entertainment Group's stable of restored films to find it's way back onto the silver screen. Last month, Joe Bullet had its world premiere at the Durban International Film Festival. Trompie will also be seen on kykNET later in the year and there are plans for a limited edition 40 Year Anniversary DVD release.

I grew up watching the Trompie series on TV. I am honored to be part of the team that is bringing back what was lost for so many years through our restoration initiative, and even more so that the filmmakers and actors from that era are finally getting their moment to shine says Benjamin Cowley, CEO of Gravel Road.
