ARRI has announced the introduction of its new lightweight 65mm camera.

Based on the compact ALEXA 35 camera body, the ALEXA 265 has a sensor three times as large but is only 4mm longer and 11mm wider, said the company. The reduction in form factor follows feedback from existing ALEXA 65 users. The new camera is less than one third of the weight of its predecessor at 3.3 kg, enabling drone deployment and use in constrained spaces.

Image: Ian Wallman/ARRI A redesigned 65mm sensor aims to deliver higher dynamic range (15 stops) and improved low light performance with sensitivity from 3200 to 6400 EI (ISO/ASA), crisper blacks, greater contrast, and a lower noise floor. Meeting the demands of filmmakers, 6.5K resolution is retained, said ARRI.

ALEXA 265 utilises ARRI's LogC4 workflow and 3D LUTs, recording ARRIRAW in camera to the Codex Compact Drives used across the ARRI range. Compatible with standard drive readers and docks, Codex HDE (High Density Encoding) can also be used, reducing file sizes while retaining image quality. On-set monitors can be set up in HD or UHD, displaying SDR or HDR, or both. Updated SDK will enable integration with all major third-party software tools. Images are processed in camera with the ARRI REVEAL suite enabling accurate colour capture and enhanced realism.

The filter cartridge system allows filter trays to be place ahead of the sensor, with ARRI FSND filters from zero to ND2.7 in single-stop increments available from launch and further options planned for future release.

ALEXA 265 will be available early next year.
