Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God, which reunited Chelsea Pictures director Alex Gibney and Union Editorial Partner/Editor Sloane Klevin, has won the Creative Arts Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced today. Gibney wrote, produced and directed the film, which was edited and co-produced by Klevin. On Mea Maxima, Gibney cited Klevin's ability to find the information, heart and narrative drive in those interviews and to set them in a story that was visually arresting and emotionally powerful to both deaf and the hearing audiences as an extraordinary accomplishment.
Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God premiered on HBO in February. It begins with the story of Father Lawrence Murphy - a Milwaukee priest who abused at least 200 deaf children from 1950-1974 - and evolves into a courageous, uncensored examination of the global scale of abuse in the Catholic Church and the dangers of permitting the Vatican to maintain a system of justice impervious to prosecution.
Earlier this year, the The Irish Film & Television Academy honored Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God with the IFTA Award for Best Documentary. The film has also won the British Film Institute's Grierson Award for Best Documentary Feature.
Entrants in the Emmy's juried categories are screened by a panel of professionals in their peer group. Eschewing nominees, these categories employ a one-step evaluation and voting procedure - it is possible for there to be no winner awarded. The Creative Arts Emmy ceremony will take place on September 15 at Los Angeles Nokia Theatre, with a two-hour edited version being broadcast on the 21st on the new FX spin-off network FXX. The Primetime Emmy Awards -- will air live on CBS on September 22nd at 8pm ET.
Klevin's recent spot work includes campaigns for Kohler via Arnold NY (Raymond Bark, director); Diet Coke via Droga5 (Fredrik Bond, director); Trojan Lubricants via the Joey Company (Peggy Sirota, director); United Health Care via The Glover Park Group (Mark Pellington, director); and a short film for GQ online directed by Lauren Greenfield of Chelsea Pictures.
Union Editorial has offices in Santa Monica, CA, New York City, and London, where it maintains an alliance with Marshall Street Editors. The company is presided over by Partner/Executive Producers Michael Raimondi and Caryn MacLean. The Union roster is comprised of Partner/Editors Jim Haygood, Einar, Jay Friedkin, Sloane Klevin, and editors Nico Alba, Jinx Godfrey, Nicholas Wayman-Harris, Laura Milstein, Marco Perez, Eric Argiro, Mike Colao, and Lawrence Young.
About the Film
MEA MAXIMA CULPA: SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD investigates the secret crimes of Father Lawrence Murphy, a charismatic Milwaukee priest who abused more than 200 Deaf children in a school under his control. The film documents the first known public protest against clerical sex abuse in the U.S., which led to a case that spanned three decades and ultimately resulted in a lawsuit against the pontiff himself. The investigation helped uncover documents from the secret Vatican archives that show the Pope, who must operate within the mysterious rules of the Roman Curia, as both responsible and helpless in the face of evil.
