Barbie was the highest-grossing movie at the South African box office this year. According to a report by IMDp Pro, the movie grossed approximately $2,713,438 (R50,244,933.08). The movie was undoubtedly a fan favourite in South Africa. As reported by The SouthAfrican, the South African movie premiere included a Barbie box photo booth, pink carpet and tons of celebs who showed up to support the movie.

Barbie wasn't the only top movie at the box office, however. Here are some of the highest-grossing movies that South Africans flocked to the cinema for in 2023, according to IMDp Pro statistics.

What were the top 3 South African box office movies in 2023? Barbie led the way according to South African box office stats with a massive opening week of $665,013 (R12,321,051.76) in South Africa. It was also the number one movie globally earning $1,441,820,453 worldwide as reported by IMDP Pro's worldwide box office report. Fast X was second at the box office in South Africa, earning $2,199,035 (R40,732,439.83). Third place went to Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One.

Movies that made millions in South African theatres South Africans flocked to the cinemas according to the stats. The movies made over $1,123,713 this year include John Wick: Chapter 4, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Oppenheimer, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Little Mermaid and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Other movies South Africans loved The Guardians of the Galaxy movies proved to still be a fan favourite in South Africa as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. topped the list at 10. Other famous sequels that did well at the box office were The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and Meg 2: The Trench.

Movies that failed to make a large impact Some movies didn't do as well as expected at the box office in South Africa. Scream VI, from the legendary Scream movies only made R492,224. Other popular sequel titles such as My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 and Magic Mike's Last Dance also didn't earn much. This is likely because these movies didn't receive much marketing as titles such as Barbie and The Little Mermaid.
