In celebration of Saul Bass birthday today, the late inconic designer who was best known for his award-winning movie title sequences and groundbreaking art, we present to you his 1983 film Quest based on Ray Bradburys short story Frost And Fire. Also co-directed by his wife Elaine Bass, Quest is an 80s sci-fi masterpiece that no one saw. The film runs just under 30 minutes but packs in eons of metaphysical insanity, apexing in a scene where a young man plays lazer chess against a sasquatch on top of a ziggurat(!).
Quest has some absolutely stunning visual FX, many of which were created digitally and like Tron, were real computer generated images and not just rotoscoped. It should also comfort you greatly (and also warms my heart) to know before watching Quest, that both Saul and Elaine were giant fans of deep-cut prog rock. On a distant planet, descendants of a crashed spaceship are subjected to mysterious forces that cause them to age and die in just eight days. They must also live in caves to escape the bitter cold of night and the killing heat of day. One young boy is determined to find his way back to the ship that brought them there.
