Speaking at the Evertz press conference at NAB 2018 today, Marketing Manager Bob Fung described 2018 as the year of IP and announced the debut of the Scorpion smart media-aggregation platform, which uses both dark fiber and managed IP.

IP as a technology has come of age; 2018 is really the year of IP. If you're putting in an infrastructure now, your first consideration will be IP. At Evertz, he said, we've been deploying full IP infrastructures at scale since 2014 and over that time we've got a lot of feedback from our customers [on how to further develop these IP networks.]

You can do things better and differently with IP, he continued, adding, You're almost doing yourself a disservice if you only do the same with IP as you did with SDI.

On that note, Fung ran through the multitude of new releases and enhancements that the company is presenting in Las Vegas. Among them is Scorpion, a scalable, high-density platform for dark fiber and managed IP networks. It is offered in three form factors that make it a useful transport solution for implementations ranging from large-scale multichannel to small-control-room single-channel standalone applications.

Said Fung, Scorpion uses dark fiber as well as managed IP connections. This is normally done only on dark fiber, but now we're seeing more on managed IP.

A defining feature of the Scorpion smart media-aggregation platform is the broad selection of user-selectable interface mini-modules that can be used to create a highly customised transport platform for all applications. The mini-module interfaces support all the common signal interfaces found in broadcast facilities, including 12G/3G/HD-SDI, ASI, HDMI, and analog video. In addition, AES and MADI audio, intercom, Ethernet, and serial data are supported.

Additionally, the company is showcasing cloud-based closed captioning. This all-IP system is a great opportunity for us to reinvent how captioning is done, Fung said, adding, Now we can do a full captioning service in the cloud, so you can scale up or scale down your captioning facilities.

Mediator-X, Evertz's software platform for automating enterprise-scale media workflows within linear and non-linear applications, will be on display showing how to streamline content-preparation workflows, orchestrate third-party content-validation and -processing tools, centralize playout operations, and simplify mass deliveries of non-linear assets.

Evertz will also be showcasing the power of Mediator-X and its advanced integration with a number of vendors in cloud-based environments: Interra Systems BATON, AVID Illuminate, and Cloudian HyperStore.
