About Happy Valley

Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) is a no-nonsense police sergeant who heads up a team of officers in a rural Yorkshire valley. When a staged kidnapping spirals out of control, turning into a brutal series of crimes, Catherine finds herself involved in something significantly bigger than her rank, but unknowingly close to home.

Series 1

Catherine Cawood is a policewoman in the ironically named Happy Valley, the nickname for the drug-affected Calder Valley in West Yorkshire, England. Her private life is complicated. She lives with her sister Clare, a recovering addict, and grandson, Ryan, whose mother, Catherine's daughter, Becky, killed herself after being raped. Now the man Catherine believes to be the rapist, Tommy Lee Royce, is out of jail and back in town.

Series 2

Eighteen months after the events of the first series, Catherine is back at work and has been awarded the Queen's Police Medal for gallantry. When Royce's mother is killed, Catherine finds herself implicated in a string of murders. While trying to prove her innocence, Catherine is tasked with investigating a human trafficking operation linked to the serial killings. Catherine's grandson, Ryan, develops a friendship with a new teaching assistant, Miss Wealand, who has an ulterior motive.

Series 3

Taking place seven years after the events of the second series, Catherine is coming close to retirement age. She is called to investigate the discovery of human remains found near a reservoir, where she comes to realise the murder suspects share a history with Royce, who has since been transferred to a cell in Sheffield and is awaiting trial for a string of unseen offences. Ryan, who is now 16 years old, has been keeping in touch with his father, and has been visiting him secretly behind Catherine's back. When Catherine finds out, she presents Ryan with an ultimatum.
