TFBOYS' Fanta TVC Graded on DaVinci Resolve by Beijing's HomeBoy Cine Studio Beijing - June 25, 2015 - Blackmagic Design today announced that the Coca-Cola Company 's new Fanta television commercial, starring popular Chinese teenage band TFBOYS, was graded by Beijing based HomeBoy Cine Studio with DaVinci Resolve.

In the new commercial, TFBOYS interpret different flavors of Fanta soda and call on young consumers to join in a cuteness competition, where based on the votes, the cutest person is elected.

Wentao Li, Resolve colorist at HomeBoy Cine Studio, who graded Golden Horse Award winning film The Hammer and Sickle Are Sleeping and commercials for some of the largest international brands, such as Volkswagen, Toyota and Samsung, was tasked with producing a vibrant, clean and film like look for the Fanta spot. He also had to finish the work, from conforming to color grading and outputting, within six hours.

Replacing the digital look of the original footage with a film look was the key to this project. DaVinci Resolve comes with various film emulation LUTs that enable colorists to get different film looks quickly. We chose one of the LUTs and made some adjustments so we got vivid colors making the spot vibrant enough while retaining the cinematic look, said Li.

The shooting set was full of bright colored items and some of them in the background could distract viewers from the foreground, so I desaturated the items in the background to prevent them from stealing the foreground's thunder, he said. Custom Curves in Resolve allowed me to directly manipulate the color of such an item in the background, doing away with the need to pull a key or add a mask, perfect for tightly scheduled commercial spot projects.

Resolve's seamless interoperability with other NLE systems means all regular effects on the timeline imported via XML could be recognized without error, including transitions, retiming, zoom and pan etc, so I didn't have to waste time fixing unrecognized items.

DaVinci Resolve's node based grading was great for me to manage the complex node structures and make quick adjustments in response to the requests from the director or cinematographer. By turning on and off a node, we were able to see what the image looked like before and after the adjustment, which saved the director time he would have spent deciding if a grade was satisfactory, he continued.

Of the editing features in Resolve, Li said: Obviously, these editing features in Resolve bring me a lot of convenience. I was able to make online edits to the timeline per the client's request at any time, so I didn't have to do conforming over and over again.

Different versions of the commercial were required, e.g. the version for the VFX designer or editor. With filtering tools like flag and mark, we were able to arrange sequences to be exported as versions with different durations, resolutions and formats, all of which was done on the Deliver page, without the need to switch between different pages, he concluded.
