Twitter Feeds to Follow at Sundance 0: Narrative Filmmakers

Even if you're not heading to Park City, you can still keep up with all the latest happenings at Sundance. Get news about your most anticipated moviesstraight from the narrative filmmakers themselves!

Not attending Sundance this year? Join the club. But thanks to social media, there is no need to be on the outside looking in. Attend the Festival virtually by following filmmakers who use Twitter (and other popular social media outlets) to share their Festival experiences with their friends, fans, and fellow industry members.

If you're a film student or movie lover, there's no better way to experience any Festival than through the eyes of the participating filmmakers who just happen to be proficient twitterers. By poring over the Sundance line-up and culling a multitude of different feeds, we have compiled a list of the filmmakers who we believe will thoughtfully (and humorously) share their 2013 Sundance journeys. Today, we're focusing on narrative filmmakers.

Ben Wheatley(@Mr_Wheatley)

The British genre director (Kill List, Down Terrance) makes his first Sundance appearance in the Spotlight section with the black comedy, Sightseers. Wheatley keeps up with his fans on both Twitter and tumblr by answering questions, retweeting audience reactions and causally sharing photos from his travels.

David Lowery (@davidlowery)

David Lowery is no stranger to the Festival circuit. The multi-talented artist (he writes, edits and directs) has three films at Sundance this year: Ain't Them Bodies Saints (starring Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara and Ben Foster), Pit Stop (co-writer) and Shane Carruth's Upstream Color, which he co-edited with the writer/director. Pit Stop is in the NEXT program while the other two features are in the U.S Dramatic section. So expect multiple twitter updates from all three film screenings and be sure to check out his Instagram account.

James Franco (@JamesFrancoTV)

The actor turned scholar turned filmmaker is rather elusive on Twitter (his recent tweets have been pictures uploaded through his WhoSay account), but we're sure that he'll have much to say about his Sundance experience this year. He has two films in the Festival: Interior. Leather Bar. in the New Frontier Film section, which he co-directed, and kink in the Midnight section, which he produced.

Jill Soloway (@jillwaysolo)

Already an established name in the realm of television (she produced and wrote for series like Six Feet Under and The United States of Tara), Jill Soloway is making the trip to Sundance with Afternoon Delight, her debut feature narrative in the U.S Dramatic section. Her tweets are funny, timely, and informative so look forward to all her coveragein 140 characters or less.

Jim Rash (@RashisTVUgly)

Fresh from an Oscar win for his work on The Descendants screenplay with fellow collaborators Nat Faxon and Alexander Payne, Rash is coming to Sundance with The Way, Way Back. Co-written and directed by Rash and Faxon and starring Steve Carrell and Sam Rockwell, the film is celebrating its world premiere at Sundance. Expect some funny quips and famous faces on his feed throughout the course of the ten-day festival.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (@hitrecordjoe)

Ladies, contain yourselves. Though he is no stranger to Sundance as an actor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is making his feature directorial debut with Don Jon's Addiction in the Premieres section. Gordon-Levitt is a constant user of Twitter (and tumblr) and will be working with other artists through his collaborative production company, HitRECord, at this year's Festival.

June Diane Raphael (@MsJuneDiane) & Casey Wilson (@caseyrosewilson)

June Diane Raphael (Burning Love, New Girl) and Casey Wilson (Happy Endings, SNL) are coming to Sundance with Ass Backwards, the new feature that they co-wrote and in which they co-star. Appearing in the Midnight section, this comedy about two former beauty pageant losers is sure to delight Festival audiences. Be sure to catch a glimpse of Sundance from these entertaining ladies' points of view.

Lake Bell (@lakebell)

Lake Bell (What Happens in Vegas, Black Rock) is a veteran of the Sundance Film Festival as an actress, but this year she is making her feature screenwriting/directorial debut with In a World (starring Bell and Demetri Martin) in the U.S Dramatic section. Funny, fresh and delightfully candid, Bell will no doubt give her followers a unique perspective on the Park City antics.

Thomas Lennon (@thomaslennon)

Along with frequent collaborator, Robert Ben Garant, Thomas Lennon (The State, Reno 911!) is making his long-awaited co-directorial debut with Hell Baby in this year's Midnight section. Lennon is a frequent Twitter user who re-tweets fans and famous friends alike, providing expansive insights into his unique brand of comedy and the infinite variety of his work.

Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Jason Eisener (@Simon_Barrett, @AdamWingard, @jasoneisener)

Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, and Jason Eisener are three of out the seven genre filmmakers behind S-VHS, the sequel to V/H/S, the horror anthology that shocked audiences at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Surely lightning will strike twice in the Midnight section this year. Barrett, Wingard, and Eisener are all avid users of twitter and Wingard and Eisener are both active on tumblr. Expect a barrage of hilarious and timely updates from these three budding genre auteurs.
