In the last few months, three queer pupils have taken their own lives after allegedly being bullied by their fellow classmates. Following these shocking deaths, the Legal Resources Centre has called on the Department of Basic Education to develop a policy that protects LGBTQI pupils in local schools.

QUEER LEARNERS TAKE THEIR OWN LIVES AFTER BEING BULLIED 14-year-old Mpho Falithenjwa took his own life in June after he was mocked for his sexuality at school. As per MambaOnline, Mpho's sister, Thando, claimed that he was being called names by his fellow classmates.
The South African previously reported that Soweto teenager Tiro Moalusi took his own life in August after a teacher allegedly mocked him during a speech presentation. The PJ Simelane Secondary School Grade 9 pupil did not return to school after the incident and took his own life at home.

Lukhanyo Jongqo who was a pupil at Kubusie Combined School in Stutterheim, Eastern Cape, also took his life following a similar incident.
LEGAL RESOURCES CENTRE CALLS FOR LGBTQI POLICY IN SCHOOLS In a statement, the Legal Resources Centre said the shock deaths of queer students highlights the need for the Department of Basic Education to take steps to protect LGBTQI pupils.
Policies, at the end of the day, are implemented by employees of the Department of Basic Education, whether they be teachers, principals, teaching assistants and other staff members.

Therefore, we risk seeing a repeat of these incidents if progressive policies and staff sensitisation are not implemented urgently and concurrently, said the Legal Resources Centre.
The Legal Resources Centre further mentions that the Department of Education in the Western Cape as begun drafting a gender identity and sexual orientation policy.

LEGAL RESOURCES CENTRE CALLS ON MOTSHEKGA TO LAUNCH INVESTIGATION The Legal Resources Centre has called on Basic Education minister Angie Motshekga to launch an investigation into the deaths of Mpho Falithenjwa and Lukhanyo Jongqo.
The organisation also calls for Motshekga to collect data centred around the dropout rate of LGBTQI pupils in schools.
