Nevion IP contribution solution powered North American coverage of Summer Games

North American broadcaster selected Nevion solution for its remote production in Brazil

Oslo, Norway, 7 September 2016 - Nevion, award-winning provider of virtual media production infrastructure, supplied a large number of media gateways, together with the VideoIPath service management platform, to enable a leading North American broadcaster to cover the Summer Games in Brazil. The equipment allowed the broadcaster to provide comprehensive remote live production from its studio centers in two cities back home.

Nevion's media gateways were used for JPEG2000 compression and encapsulation of MADI audio using published SMPTE specifications and VSF Technical Recommendations. All streams were protected leveraging ST2022-7 for network diversity and seamless IP switching. Part of the installation was in flyaway kits used at venues around Rio de Janeiro. From there, the IP signals went to the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) and onwards through circuits to the production centers back home.

The requirement from the broadcaster was to have talent at each venue and the highest video quality sent back home, with reverse video, audio and data from the studios to the main site. Nevion's JPEG2000 codecs met the challenging demands providing highly reliable, low-latency streams that performed flawlessly over a distance of more than 8,000km.

The project used VS902 gateways distributed in the flyaway kits which went to each sporting venue, the broadcaster's section of the IBC, and its main studios in the homeland. Nevion also supplied a number of eMerge aggregation switches, which served as the Ethernet infrastructure, and its TNS4200 high density stream monitor. The overall system was controlled by VideoIPath, an SDN media management system.

One important requirement for the project was for the broadcaster's engineers to be able to provision their own IP circuits, from within a familiar user environment. Nevion was able to offer this using VideoIPath, which provides very simple interfaces for connection management, service assurance, and network inventory.

The broadcaster also used Nevion's advanced touch panel for interfacing to VideoIPath. This enables operators to make dynamic connections on the fly across two continents instead of relying solely on a web-based GUI.

We have been providing JPEG2000 over IP solutions for remote production for many years, so we were able to demonstrate mature, well-proven solutions to this major broadcaster, said Geir Bryn-Jensen, CEO, Nevion. More importantly, we demonstrated that our solutions fit seamlessly into their operations, without the need for on-site support. They built and configured the systems in their own labs and the performance of the system was a great success throughout the games.
