Shaun Richards Art on Display at American Tobacco

Bystander Exhibit Now Open

A new art exhibit recently opened at American Tobacco. Shaun Richards' Bystander will be on display through January 2014.

A painting and mixed media artist, Richards lives and works in Raleigh, NC. Since 2007, his work has been focused on social dynamics, incentives, and identity, along with notions of beauty, and artifice.

Through the intersection of text, image, low-brow aesthetics, and repetition, my work questions our complicity in and responsibility for the world, explains Richards.

Topics ranging from lock-key kids and welfare states, to colonialism and institutional bias have been fair game as Richards grapples with specters drawn from the last half-century of Americana. Through the intersection of text, image, low-brow aesthetics, and repetition, Richards questions our complicity in and responsibility for the world.

The exhibit contains work from three different series of Richards: Woman and Children First (2009, institutional alarmism), Crash (2010, economy and ethics), Concession Stand and Standard Deviation (2011-2013, ethics, identity, and circumstance).

Although individual themes vary, the overarching themes run throughout the work remain the same, said Richards.

The 10 paintings, created in the past five years, are on display in the Crowe Lobby Art Gallery, adjacent to L'Uva. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The Crowe Lobby is open from 9am to 6pm, Monday through Sunday.

A large piece of Richards' work is also on display on loan in the Reed Building lobby.
