CYCLONE CLAIMS OVER 400 LIVES IN MALAWI Cyclone Freddy returned to southeastern Africa this past weekend for a second time in less than three weeks.
It has claimed more than 400 lives in Malawi and many others in Mozambique and Madagascar. In the southern region of Malawi, a village was wiped out and buried in the sand.

The family shop is in the Thyolo district, and theirs is nearly the only one to still be standing after the destruction the cyclone has caused.
I thank God. I know there is nothing left in the shop. But at least my shop is still standing, and I will start [again] from there, the owner of the shop told AllAfrica.
TWO WEEKS OF MOURNING DECLARED IN COUNTRY On Wednesday Chakwera declared two weeks of national mourning for the people killed by Cyclone Freddy. This week the country will head into their second week of mourning.
In view of the extent of the loss of life caused by this disaster, I have directed that all of us as a nation observe 14 days of mourning and that all flags fly at half mast for the first seven of those days, Chakwera said in an address to the nation.
