With the emergence of 4K and 8K technology, it is important for video professionals to understand some resolution fundamentals when it comes to capturing moving images.

4K resolution (4096 x 2160 pixel resolution),refers to the number of pixels that exist in a straight line of a certain area, which double that of standard HD (1920 x 1080 pixel resolution), resulting in four times the number of pixels. It is therefore important for cinematographers to capture 4K shots in focus and without any distortion as even the slightest movement or focus mistake will decrease resolution to HD.

In the context of resolution in moving images, one can get a wealth of information, which changes at different time intervals, in comparison to still images. When there is movement taking place in the whole frame, meaning that there is motion in the foreground and the background, a higher frame rate is needed in order for one to see a clear and accurate image.

Higher resolution demands improved lenses and techniques. A video s linear resolution is directly proportional to the frame per second (FPS) one needs to apply, and if this is not correctly calibrated it could ruin the desired illusion and result in motion blur, or shuddering between frames.

Digital cinema cameras are essential to this new workflow, as 4K consumer based content distribution takes its place as an integral future technology.
