Thales UK today welcomed the publication of a joint Government-industry vision for the future of the defence sector, developed through the Defence Growth Partnership (DGP).
The strategic vision of the DGP is an important first step, and is fully supported by Thales UK.
The Securing Prosperity report, based on analysis jointly undertaken by government and the defence industry, sets out the priorities for Government and industry in growing and supporting this vital sector, which is a major contributor to the UK's high-value manufacturing, high-tech engineering and technology jobs, and UK trade.
The UK is a world leader in defence technology, and the DGP report has set a clear roadmap for both Government and industry as we work to maximise the UK's share of this growing global market, said Victor Chavez, CEO of Thales UK and Chair of the DGP's Intelligent Systems team.
The UK's key skills and industrial capabilities must be strengthened, and it is essential that government and industry cooperate to grow the next generation of engineers and scientists, and invest in a world-class research base. Industry also needs the continued and consistent support from government in taking the UK's market-leading technologies to growing markets.
The DGP represents an exciting new approach to fostering a thriving defence sector, and we welcome the Government's efforts to develop a strategic approach and develop long-term positions. It is vital that we encourage innovation and improve the UK's competitiveness, creating not only a more competitive industry but boosting the UK's economic growth, he said. The strategic vision of the DGP is an important first step, and is fully supported by Thales UK.
As part of its strategic approach, the DGP will focus on two key domains: air capabilities and intelligent systems.
Intelligent systems are the defining military of technology of our age. Information management, mission management, intelligent automation and human-machine interaction are reshaping both the operations UK military forces undertake and the markets for UK companies, said Victor Chavez, Chair of the DGP's Intelligent Systems team. It is a sector which is key to operational advantage and is already sizeable with great potential for growth.
The Defence Growth Partnership (DGP) is jointly led by the Department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the defence industry, with support from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) as the key customer for UK defence output.
