What is art? For some it is something beautiful, for others it's something that provokes thought or emotion, and for the artist it's a labour of love that represents countless hours of work. For London-based artist duo, Gilbert and George, their photo-based artwork is influenced by the everyday world; not wanting people's enjoyment of their work to be limited by their understanding of art. Their famously explicit and controversial artwork has been exhibited worldwide, garnering awards from the Turner Prize in 1986 - considered the most prestigious art award in the UK - to the Lorenzo il Magnifico prize in 2007.
Rotolight are delighted to be able to play a part in the future creation of such detailed and striking pieces of art. A combination of Rotolight Anova PRO 2s and AEOS LEDs now light their studio in the East End of London where they produce their work; from initial photograph to final large-scale printing.
Gilbert and George have been working with artificial lighting for years to assist the creation of their work but, struggling with excess heat in their small studio and the cumbersome size of their current lights, the duo needed to re-evaluate their setup. Requiring a powerful output to ensure their images are evenly lit in order to capture as much detail as possible, while also needing to move away from traditional tungsten lights that emit a vast amount of heat, the duo approached Rotolight. The Anova PRO 2s, mounted on pentagraphs in their studio, offer a continuous light that delivers an outstanding 10,700 lux at three feet; eliminating any shadows and providing Gilbert and George with a blank canvas' on which they can then layer the bright colours for which they are renowned.
Gilbert and George have been creating their work in a small studio that has been a part of their East End home since 1968, and it's still occupied by relics of a time before their production moved to digital. Everything happens in this room - from the photography to the editing, to the printing. A notable benefit of working with Rotolight LEDs is that, even in a small studio, the bulbs remain entirely cool; reducing operating costs by eliminating the need for air-conditioning and ensuring the studio remains a comfortable space to work in even when running up to nine lights simultaneously for long periods of time.
Additionally, with just Gilbert, George and their assistant working in the studio, Rotolight LEDs provide a simple lighting solution that they can operate without difficulty; with a clear and accurate display and easy to use dials on the rear of the lightParticularly the AEOS, weighing less than 1.5kg at just one inch thick, allows for easy handheld use and transportation for smaller teams. All of Rotolight's LEDs offer a powerful High Speed Sync flash (up to 1/8000th) in addition to their continuous output for whenever you need to freeze action, with outstanding colour accuracy (CRI 96, TLCI 91) to minimise time spent in post-production.
