RT News Channel equips its first UK facility with Sony

Sony Professional has today announced it has worked with broadcast and professional solutions provider CVP to equip the RT News Channels new London broadcast facility. In order to equip its first UK studios, the Russian broadcaster invested in four Sony HXC-100 SD/HD system cameras, a MVS-6520 vision mixer, and three BRC-H900 robotic cameras, as well as further peripheral equipment, all fitting together as part of a full HD news workflow.

Having previously broadcast all English-language news coverage from Moscow, with opt-outs in Washington USA, RT made the decision to begin producing its UK news and current affairs content in the UK, setting up a new facility in Millbank Tower (Westminster). As the first 24/7 English-language news channel to bring the Russian view on global news, the company worked with CVP to select equipment with a proven track record in world class broadcasting. Having been used by numerous broadcasters globally, Sonys HXC-100 was a natural choice, featuring a high-performance 2/3-inch CCD sensor for shooting in HD. RCP-1500 remote control panels were also provided with the cameras, providing the flexibility of remote operation if needed.

The new facility features two studio spaces, which alternate between being used for live shooting and pre-recording. Sonys flexible MVS-6520 vision mixer forms the backbone of the production environment, providing seamless production capability. Ideally suited for the new studios, the mixer provides 32 colour corrected inputs and 16 outputs, with 2x mix effects. The standard multi-viewer output also means that additional monitoring is unnecessary with 2x 10 way splits available, simultaneously saving space and reducing costs. Crucially, the mixer integrated easily with the newsrooms computer system, minimising the pain of multi-system integration.

Sonys cameras, audio equipment, and vision mixer are recognised as staples amongst broadcasters the world over, and we wanted to make sure that it was this equipment that underpinned our UK news operations.

Specifically designed with broadcast studios in mind, three BRC-H900 robotic cameras also deliver high quality HD images within the studios, via three 1/2 inch Exmor CMOS sensors. Straightforward control is enabled through connection to an IP-based system, with these Pan/Tilt/Zoom cameras providing footage from unobtrusive positions in the studios. In addition to the cameras and vision mixer in the studios, four Sony wireless microphone kits (UWP-X7s) with ECM-77B lavalier microphones match HD images with crisp audio.

As part of the RT News Channels global business expansion, it has also invested in a new studio in New York City.
