CBS Sports Director Serves as Keynote Speaker Day 1 of the SVG College Summit will be highlighted by a keynote conversation with CBS Sports Director Mark Grant.
Grant will speak on the event's main stage on May 31 beginning at 4 p.m. ET to discuss the art of directing a live sporting event in today's environment, what he's learned in his 40+ years in the sports production industry, and to take your questions. Grant will be interviewed by SVG's Co-Executive Director, Editorial Services Ken Kerschbaumer.
Grant made history earlier this year when he directed his first NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four and National Championship for CBS, becoming the first person of color to sit in the director's chair for the broadcast of a major American sports championship.
Panel Discussions Address Control Room Tech, Drones, and More! From the nitty-gritty of the cloud and remote production's impacts on centralized control rooms to the flashy images acquired through the use of live drones, the agenda at the 2023 SVG College Summit is loaded with conversations geared at helping you tackle all of the pressing challenges and opportunities facing your collegiate athletic department's video production strategy.
Here are some panel highlights:
The New Control Room? Production Facilities in the Age of Remote Production and The Cloud
Thursday, June 1 | 9:00 a.m. ET
Centralized control rooms, trailers, and even fly packs are the established norm across collegiate athletic departments. As the greater broadcast industry evolves to utilize more remote (or REMI) production and cloud-based workflows, in what ways does that make us rethink the facilities that we call home? From switchers to comms to replay, graphics, audio, and everything in between, live production leaders share their takes on new flexibilities available in live production.
Confirmed Panelists:
Jeff Hanel, University of Texas at Austin, Director, Creative Video
Andrew Kurtz, Monmouth University, Director of Live Production
Greg Macchia, Riedel Communications, VP, Business Development, Live Production
Scott Rinehart, University of Notre Dame, Director, Broadcast and Streaming Technologies
Jared Timmins, Diversified, VP of Innovation, Media Solutions
Send in the Drones: Efficiently Bringing Aerial Coverage to Your Live Games
Thursday, June 1 | 10:00 a.m. ET
Across all levels of sports broadcasting, live drones are delivering truly unique visuals and providing truly eye-catching images to integrate into live game coverage. What technologies are needed to make the shot and, most importantly, what steps do you need to take to ensure you use drones safely - and legally? Live college producers who have done so, share their experiences.
Confirmed Panelists:
Byron Abt, Georgia Southern University, Assistant Director of Athletics for GATA Productions
Imry Halevi, Harvard University, Associate Director of Athletics - Content & Strategic Communications

When Linear Comes Calling: Producing Games For Your Broadcast Partner
Thursday, June 1 | 11:15 a.m. ET
In a testament to how far this industry has come, live production teams on campus are being entrusted more frequently by their linear broadcast partners to produce live games for their air. How do you prepare differently - if at all - for a linear game? What technologies and services have come up clutch for you? How does it affect staffing? How do you manage relationships with your linear broadcast partner? And what other key issues should you consider when this exciting opportunity arises - whether it's scheduled or sudden?
Confirmed Panelists:
Justin Argo, Texas A&M University, Director of Live Broadcasts
Ryan Brodie, CTI, Branch Director
Paul McAniff, Canon, Senior Technical Specialist
Dennis Trapani, University of Wyoming, Associate Athletics Director, Creative Services
More Speakers TBA

School-size Breakout Sessions Day 2 of the SVG College Summit is capped by a pair of special breakout sessions designed to offer athletic departments and conference officers of similar staff/budget sizes and challenges to speak candidly together in an off-the-record conversation. And the topics don't focus solely on technology. The conversations address everything that it takes to run an effective video production team.
These Breakouts will occur simultaneously on Thursday, June 1 from 2:30 4:00 p.m. ET.
Breakout Track 1: Large Athletic Departments
More demands from our linear partners. Bigger videoboards and larger crowds at our venues. Higher expectations. Our departments may be well-oiled content machines but what pain points are holding us back and what opportunities are
