Toronto, February 15, 2013 -Thales announced that it has been awarded a contract by Partnerships B.C. to install the company's world-leading SelTrac Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) on the new SkyTrain Evergreen Light Rapid Transit Line.

Since signalling the Expo Line in 1985, the first CBTC driverless system in the world, we have also applied our reliable SelTrac CBTC system to both the Millennium Line and Canada Line. TransLink and BCRTC can pride itself on operating one of the longest fully automated systems in the world. They are recognized world leaders in rail transit and throughout the decades, Vancouver's SkyTrain remains a well-respected system amongst urban rail operators globally; it continues to draw interest from operators considering implementing a driverless CBTC system.

Scheduled for service in 2016, the 11 km Evergreen LRT will connect Coquitlam to Vancouver via Port Moody and Burnaby and serve seven stations. It will connect without transfer to the current SkyTrain network at Lougheed Town Centre Station. Specifically, it will link directly to the Millennium Line, with connections to the Expo Line, Canada Line, the West Coast Express and regional bus networks.

The guide ways are elevated, at-grade and tunneled for a two kilometer stretch. Thales will upgrade the existing central control system and apply a two-stage implementation scheme to minimize any impact to existing SkyTrain service.

Thales's CBTC system has been proven worldwide on over 55 projects to date and operates on over 1,300 km of track in major urban centers around the world, carrying an estimated 3 billion passengers annually.
