55% Of households in the world already receive digital television In the developed world, it is estimated that 81 percent of the total TV households now receive a digital signal.

The International Telecommunication Union)ITU) has carried out an analysis which highlights the massive change from analog technology to digital television, with more than 55 percent of the TV households receiving digital signals from only 30 percent in 2008.

In its annual report for measurement of the society of the information 2013, in the developed world, it is estimated that 81 percent of the total TV households now receive a digital signal. But the conversion to the digital system is also moving apace in the developing world, where the number of households receiving digital television almost tripled in the four-year period from 2008 and end of 2012, to 42 percent.

The number of subscribers to pay-TV worldwide increased 32 percent between 2008 and 2012, overtaking the free TV in 2011. At the end of 2012, there was a total of 728 million pay TV subscriptions, which means that 53 percent of all households with television had a pay television subscription.

The new report notes that the traditional cable and satellite television platforms are facing increasing competition from providers of IPTV services and terrestrial television DVB-t.

At the same time, the delivery of television over the Internet is becoming more and more popular, especially through OTT services, already excelling providers of audiovisual content like YouTube, Netflix and or PPLive in China.

Technology of greater relative growth was IPTV, with the increase in total subscriptions of more than four times in the period of four years. In absolute terms, however, IPTV still represents a marginal number of total households with TV (5% in 2012).

Globally, ITU figures estimated at 1,400 million households with at least one unit of TV at the end of 2012. In the developing world as a whole, 72 per cent of households had a television, compared with 98 percent penetration in households in developed countries. In Africa, less than a third of all households had a television at the end of 2012.

The ITU measurement of the information society report, released annually, is the most complete snapshot of worldwide trends in the ICT world. Includes index of only ITUs ICT for development (IDI), a global index that ranks 157 countries according to their level of ICT access, use and skills. The IDI is widely recognized by the Government, agencies of the UN and the industry as the most accurate measure of the overall development of national ICT.
