Sony expands XAVC and SRMASTER format alliance to accelerate 4K content workflow

Sony announced at IBC 2013 that Autodesk is the latest member of the production community to adopt its XAVC and SRMASTER (RAW and MXF) format. The 2014 versions of Autodesk Flame Premium, Autodesk Flame , Autodesk Smoke Advanced, Autodesk Flare and Autodesk Lustre software will be capable of both XAVC and SRMASTER format processing to support 4K workflows for creative 3D finishing and colour grading.

Sonys XAVC and SRMASTER formats are open-platform technologies for high-quality motion picture content and the recording format of Sonys CineAlta F65, PMW-F55/PMW-F5 digital motion picture camera systems. Autodesk is a licensee of these formats, using Sony software development kits and technical support and is now offering products with support for this new important digital acquisition format.

The XAVC and SRMASTER format compatible versions of Flame Premium, Flame, Smoke Advanced, Flare and Lustre, widely used in Hollywood studios and post-production houses, are planned to be available later this year.

Demand for acquisition and production of 4K content is on the rise and its critical the industry works together to make the workflows from production to post as seamless and open as possible, said Chris Bradshaw, senior vice president, Autodesk Media & Entertainment. The Autodesk creative finishing products, like Flame Premium 2014, will be compatible with the XAVC and SRMASTER format, to help our customers take full advantage of its capabilities.

The XAVC format is a format that holds various advantages for high quality image reproduction including 4K pixel resolution, high frame rate recording up to 180P, between 8bit and 12bit colour depth, wide colour space(S-Gamut) and refined gamma (S-log). For Sonys F5 and F55 4K cameras it is currently supporting as high as 10bit colour depth

Members of the Sony XAVC alliance (40 supporters), and SRMASTER alliance (33 supporters) include post production companies and manufacturers of content production solutions including on-set dailies, non-linear editing and colour grading technology.

The XAVC and the SRMASTER platforms have been developed to benefit the entire industry in the creation of the highest-quality motion picture content, said Fabien Pisano, Strategic Marketing Manager, Sony Europe.
