KCETs Award-Winning Weekly Series SOCAL CONNECTED Looks at the Potential of Rain Water Capture During Californias Historic Drought

BURBANK, Calf. - January 8, 2015 - The best kind of water is free, yet Southern California allows millions of gallons of rain water to flow down storm drains and into the ocean while spending millions to import expensive water. SOCAL CONNECTED, KCETs Emmy and Peabody Award-winning series explores the possibility of rain water capture as Californians continue to cope with a historic drought. Anchor Val Zavala visits one Altadena resident who uses rain barrels and other techniques to capture 90 percent of all the rain that falls on her property. Zavala also visits TreePeoples Andy Lipkis, who points to a residential street in Sun Valley that is a model for rain capture and smart water management. But is this enough to impact Southern Californias water needs?

Luring Movie Goers with Another D - Movie theaters hoped that 3D would lift sagging ticket sales, but 2014 had the lowest ticket sales in 20 years. Now, they are hoping that 4DX will lure moviegoers into theaters with moving seats, smells and sensations that accompany action and animated films. Reporter Conor Knighton goes to the countrys only 4DX theater, located at L.A. Live, to size up the pros and cons of this new technology.

Bad News for Oyster Lovers - Higher carbon dioxide levels dont only affect our atmosphere, they affect our oceans by raising acid levels. Ocean acidification impacts the survival rate of young oysters. SOCAL CONNECTED looks at how this trend is challenging oyster farming and seafood restaurants.

Food as Art - Our food culture puts the spotlight not only on cooking and taste, but on how a dish looks. This is called plating. This fascinating segment reveals the techniques of master chef Niki Nakayama as she plates an exquisite multi-course meal with the precision of a Japanese brush painter.
