DaVinci Resolve Studio brings new experiences of virtual reality in Hunters of myths series Beyond Productions is using Resolve as a comprehensive tool for post production, beyond the color grading, to create spectacular effects of virtual reality in the new season of the series.
The Australian company Beyond Productions, based in Sydney, is using DaVinci Resolve Studio of Blackmagic Design in the post-production of the contents of virtual reality for the hit series MythBusters that emits the channel Discovery Channel.

Anthony Toy, director of post-production at Beyond Productions, emphasizes that "the company had been investigating about the possibilities offered by virtual reality and met with that Discovery was also investing resources in this area and, indeed, the channel was very interested in offering this type of content".
The filming of the material for the virtual reality scenarios began in the second week of may with the shark week special in MythBusters.
Put a puzzle together
"The first thing we did was record the underwater shots of sharks," said Ambar Sidhwani, editor of virtual reality for the series. "Regardless of the place of filming, we use a platform with six or seven cameras, capture static or subjective planes and define a field of view of 360 x 180 degrees with an aspect ratio of 4:3 to 80 connection all these specifications helped us later to synchronize the images during the post-production process", he added.
In this last stage, the material was processed through a program to assemble images to ensure synchronization, calibration and stabilization, as well as the exposure compensation. "Given that Resolve is not subject to any resolutions in particular, became the ideal solution because the final assembled image does not fit within any conventional format such as HD, 2K, 4K or UHD", emphasizes Michael Grahan. "The flexibility to work in the native resolution of the final material allowed to dispense with the black stripes on the sides of the image that would affect the way in which it closes to generate the field of view of 360 degrees."
Sidhwani added that "the main advantage of Resolve is processing the images in their appearance and original image frequency relationship. According to Sidhwani, this aspect is vital in virtual environments, since sudden changes may cause nausea in some people. "The subtlety in the movements is in the more enveloping experiences and prevents participants to experience dizziness or other unpleasant sensations," he said.
The grading of the material was done with DaVinci Resolve Studio on a computer monitor. "It is not possible to monitor the images in an external display to a high resolution because it does not coincide with any broadcasting standard, so we carry out the adjustment of color on a computer monitor. Graphic representations that offers Resolve are extraordinary and help us to remain within the levels of secure transmission"Amber notes.
Assembly program manages to maintain a balance between the various outlets in order to obtain a uniform result trying to maintain the highest level of detail. Sometimes, this operation brings as a result images with low contrast. However, Beyond post-producer aims create a striking and colorful appearance since end platforms are virtual reality equipment or screens of smartphones.
"The lack of contrast generates some obstacles that exceptional Resolve performance help us to overcome," explained Michael. "The source material comes from a compressed source of 8-bit, so by increasing the saturation and contrast produce unwanted artifacts and an effect of continuous gradient." "The combination between the work environment in 32-bit offering Resolve, reducing noise filter and other elements of the program allowed us to improve the quality of the images and achieve the style we were looking for while they looked too processed".
Michael adds that "Resolve curves panel is one of the tools we use to obtain excellent results, not only in virtual reality scenarios, but also in other projects. It is an extraordinary provision which gives us great flexibility for creating and manipulating images with ease, as well as be able to project a powerful, uniform appearance in the different digital scenarios."
