The line You ain't nothing but a hound dog from Doja Cat's hit song Vegas dominated the TikTok trends for several months following the release of its music video in June. Pity the funky melodic hit is not eligible for the 2023 Academy Awards, according to Variety.

Members of the Academy's music branch have deemed Vegas ineligible for the 2023 Oscars. This because the the key lyric, You ain't nothing but a hound dog, contains interpolated material from Elvis Presley's Hound Dog. The classic 1956 Elvis Presley song was created by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.

This goes against the Academy guidelines which commands words and music to be original and written specifically for the motion picture, and Vegas includes elements of a pre-existing song hence it was disqualified.

NO OSCAR GOLD FOR VEGAS Vegas is the lead single from the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann's Elvis Presley biopic. The song is written by Doja Cat and produced by Roget Chahayed and Yeti Beats. The hit song reached No 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October, marking the rapper's sixth Hot 100 top 10.

The eligibility list of songs and scores was revealed on Monday 12 December, but only members of the Academy have access to the website. The voting to determine the final five nominees in each category also began on Monday.

In total 147 scores and 82 songs were entered and Vegas did not appear among the scores and songs determined eligible for voting, kicking it out of the running for Oscars gold.

DOJA'S PLANS FOR NEW ALBUM The Woman singer has had a chilled year following the success of her 2021 Grammy-nominated album Planet Her and recently she detailed her plans for a new album during an interview with Dazed.

According to hnhh draws inspiration for the album Machine Girl, Deli Girls, Orbital, and Death Grips, as well as the Beastie Boys, and she says she wants to put out several singles disconnected from her new project before dropping.

There's songs from a year and a half ago that I made and I'm like, These need to come out.' I have a project that's going to be quite consistent, hopefully, which is coming up next and is the real album, the real project. But before that, I would like to put out some singles that don't really connect to it in any way. They're just fun things that I would like to put out, she said.
