Georgina Call is currently working in the PR team at YouView on a summer internship. She is working alongside 9 other summer interns who are working in various teams across the business. She is about to start her final year studying Politics and Modern History at the University of Manchester.
With so many potential employers out there it can be difficult to know where to apply which company will offer the best fit and experience for you. Here are eight of the (many) reasons YouView should top your list.
1. Real Responsibilities
YouView is keen to give staff responsibility and allow them to take ownership of projects. Working as the PR Intern, I was responsible for publicising the internship programme and managing YouView's social media accounts, giving me the opportunity to plan and implement my own ideas across a range of PR activity and enhance my understanding of the PR industry.
2. Support and Training
Support and training are a key part of everything YouView does. There is a great emphasis on knowledge transfer and the company encourages all employees to attend training sessions and courses that will advance their skills. During my internship I attended social media training as well as a session organised by HR about building good working relationships which were useful as I look to begin my career in PR.
3. Opportunities
YouView is an exciting, fast-growing technology company which is currently expanding its technology teams by over 50%. The company is keen to encourage enthusiastic and intelligent new talent across a range of different roles. Matt, the marketing intern, and I were introduced to agencies, journalists and other stakeholders to help us make connections and gain valuable and tangible experience.
4. Opportunities beyond your role
YouView doesn't just present opportunities within your core role, but also the chance to get involved with a wide variety of activities. There is a running club and football team which various interns took part in and some of the technology interns have attended hack-a-thons. During my internship, I was very lucky to have been invited to an event run by the Public Relations Consultants Association (PRCA) where I met a lot of people in the industry who gave some great insights into forging a career in PR.
5. Feel Valued
The culture at YouView is a very inclusive and colleagues go out of their way to make people feel welcome and respected. All of the interns, despite only working at the company for 10 weeks, were always treated like fully-fledged members of staff and were invited to take part in all of the activities around the office. Sanjai Jhim in Viewer Support went so far as to say it feels like you've been here much for longer than 10 weeks!'
6. Charity
The company is very socially aware and is currently supporting children's charity Coram as its 2014 charity of the year. As a group, and the interns I were involved with helping to organise the summer party, cake sales and a football tournament in aid of Coram. These projects were fantastic as they encouraged us to work together and get to know each other.
7. Colleagues
One of the highlights from my time at YouView was getting to know people from across the business. YouView has some incredibly talented staff members, from high flying broadcast executives to TV personalities, singers and charity fundraiser extraordinares! The 140 or so people who work for YouView are innovative and friendly and always willing to share their experiences and have a chat.
8. The Product
You wouldn't be able to compile a list of the reasons to work at YouView without mentioning YouView itself! (If you didn't already know) YouView is an on demand TV service that allows you to watch live free to air channels as well as on demand programmes on your TV in an intuitive way (just by scrolling back seven days through the TV guide). There are some exciting projects the company is working on at the moment and these will only serve to advance its success over the next year.
So what are you waiting for? Apply to YouView at the nearest opportunity!
