South African musician and Rastafarian Lucky Dube passed away on 18 October 2007. The legendary singer was involved in an attempted carjacking when he was gunned down by armed robbers in Rosettenville, Johannesburg.

Having put South African reggae music on the map, Dube was one of Mzansi's most influential singers. He was also known for being outspoken on social issues that deeply affected our country.

To celebrate what would've been his 58th birthday on 3 August, here are five songs to remember Lucky Dube.

1. PRISONER' Lucky Dube's album, Prisoner, was released in 1993. The eight-track album, released three years after former president Nelson Mandela was released from prison, was one of Dube's most successful album releases.

2. THE HAND THAT GIVETH' The Hand That Giveth is featured on Lucky Dube's 1988 album, Slave. In the song, the legendary musician tackles economic inequality.

3. SLAVE' Lucky Dube's Slave, is one of his most successful songs. According to SowetanLive, by 2020, the track had achieved more than 50 million streams globally. The single forms part of Dube's 1987 album of the same.

4. HOUSE OF EXILE' House of Exile is an album released by Dube in 1992. As per AllMusic, the album features Dube's toughest songwriting yet .
