The future of filmmaking innovations a focus at the 2014 NAB Show --

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), an organization aimed at advancing motion picture education and relating business in the communications, technology, media, and entertainment industries has partnered with the 2014 NAB Show for their Technology Summit on Cinema, which will highlight innovations driving the future of the film industry. The conference, titled The Future of Motion Imaging and Sound, will take place at the exhibition in Las Vegas on 5 and 6 April.

Pat Griffis, Education Vice President at SMPTE maintains that the summit will offer attendees a unique opportunity to hear from leading industry professionals and creative minds about cutting edge technology emerging in the field, as well as trends which might be affecting the next generation of filmmakers.

As the technology that drives the motion-imaging industry evolves, SMPTE s role as a standards developer puts it squarely in the midst of the latest innovations, added Griffis.

Day One

The first day of the Technology Summit will include presentations, question-and-answer sessions and a live demonstration of the new laser-illuminated projector technology which is being installed in cinemas.

Chris Cookson, who has filled senior technology executive roles at Sony Pictures and Warner Bros, will deliver a keynote talk, Cinema: Act 2, The Future, which will be followed by a roundtable discussion moderated by Michael Karagosian.

Michael Cioni, CEO at Light Iron; Phil Squyres, Senior Vice President of Technical Operations at Sony Pictures Television; and Leon Silverman, General Manager, Digital Studio, at The Walt Disney Studios will weigh in on the new era of postproduction in a session titled From Camera to Consumer the New Post Production.

Day Two

Distributive creativity in the post production process, technology s influence on storytelling and the possibilities of extended dynamic range will come into focus on the second day of the conference.

Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Chivo Lubezki; Harry Bardak, CG Sequence Supervisor for Gravity; and Steven J. Scott, Senior Supervising Digital Colourist are joined by David Cohen of Variety magazine who will moderate a session on the award winning film, Gravity.

Annie Chang, Vice President of Post-Production Technology at The Walt Disney Studios will discuss a new iPad app designed to enhance the audience viewing experience, and a two part session on how movies might be photographed and displayed in the future, will close the summit.
