Athos. Porthos. Aramis. These are the Three Musketeers of Dumas' famous work, and always more powerful as a group than individually. Together and with the help of the young d'Artagnan they managed to thwart villainy and corruption in 17th century France.
Data recovery, though never the topic of a heroic French novel, is nonetheless best served when tape storage, local disk backup and cloud solutions work together like these musketeers to provide your company with comprehensive data protection.
A Gathering Storm
In the Dumas novels, it was Cardinal Richelieu attempting to stir up trouble between France and England. A real-life example from recent memory is hurricane Sandy, which wreaked havoc for companies along the Eastern Seaboard. Companies with data centers 500 or even 1000 miles from their headquarters still felt the effects of Sandy, and many weren't expecting electricity to vanish for weeks on end.
The destruction caused by Sandy showed that these three key components of data backup work best when they work in concert. Distant data centers were vulnerable; tape alone wasn't immune to disasters and without power, even virtual servers and cloud providers could be knocked offline. The hard lessons from the storm demonstrate that any one of the three musketeers of data protection are vulnerable on their own; it's only when integrated, that they offer comprehensive protection.
All for One, One for All
That's the idea behind using a hybrid data storage and recovery methodology to prevent loss in the event of a disaster. First, a company needs to think about physical storage, like offsite tape vaulting, to make sure data is protected in the event of a natural disaster. Next, you need to consider a local protection solution, like a virtual tape library, which mirrors the data stored in your physical solution but isn't tied to a single, physical point. Finally, you need cloud-based storage that lets you access your data on-demand in the event that a local server is compromised.
The challenge in combining the rigidity of tape storage (our brooding Athos), the simplicity of disk-based solutions (calm, faithful Aramus) and the gregarious nature of cloud provisioning (portly Porthos) is doing so in a way that lets you access all three without needless complexity. Similar to the story of the Three Musketeers, these technologies are stronger as a unified whole then as separate pieces.
A secure tape storage solution with a disk backup that is accessible through the cloud offers the best of all three options and provides the necessary combination of security, accessibility and agility. They may not be quite so flashy as the musketeers of legend, but when all are used for a single purpose, they can act just as effectively in the struggle between natural disasters and data loss.
