Now in its sixth year in Cape Town and thirteenth globally, shnit International Shortfilmfestival continues its bold, bright expansion. Hosted officially in eight playground cities on five continents in 2014, 2015 will see shnit grow its cinemas programme to upwards of 40 additional cities around the world and host its New York awards show finale for the third time.
Deadlne is June 1.
shnit's CALL FOR ENTRIES is currently open through www.shnit.org and all good submission platforms, with US$100,000 up for grabs in five categories, plus NATIONAL AWARDS in South Africa and other shnit PLAYGROUND cities. The closing date for entries is 1 June. Last year saw two Oscar-winning directors head up shnit juries - Paul Haggis (Crash) as International Jury President and Gavin Hood (Tsotsi) as president of a South African jury also comprising of Jahmil Qubeka, Jenna Bass and Terence Neale.
Shnit's Cape Town team hopes to see strong SA representation in the International Competition this year. With just 64 films selected from upwards of 7,100 global entries in 2014, the competition is always extremely tight, but five-year Cape Town festival manager Sean Drummond is confident of the level of local shorts catching the eye of the selection committee. Each year sees more and more local entries, he says, and we're seeing really interesting, original and relevant storytelling and films coming out of SA. It's our goal to see them recognised on a global scale.
It's a big year for Cape Town, with Drummond rising to the role of global coordinator for shnit's international network, overseeing the festival in all of its host cities. Veteran shnit festival producer Alasdair McCulloch steps into the shoes of Cape Town festival manager, bringing fresh ideas and new energy. An exciting edition is planned, with expanded venues, events and a filmmaker and industry-focussed workshop programme on the cards. Shnit Cape Town is actively working to get SA shorts out to the world, visiting Clermont-Ferrand short film market in February this year and presenting the first of a series of SA shorts screenings in London in March, in association with shorts platform Fliqio.
Shnit 2015 takes place 7-11 October in venues in and around Cape Town. The official schedule and film line up will be announced in early September. Enter now!

shnit International Shortfilmfestival is a premier venue for the exhibition and celebration of short films. The festival is an exceptional twelve day event with a unique concept - a transnational film festival simultaneously taking place in multiple cities on five continents worldwide, with three main components: shnit PLAYGROUNDS, lasting five days and taking place in all of our host cities around the world, shnit CINEMAS, online and in cinemas all around the world, and our shnit FINALE awards ceremony in New York.
The international competition shnit OPEN includes five award categories and total cash prizes of US$ 100,000 and attracts award-winning short filmmakers from around the globe. As a result, shnit presents a competition program of exceptional quality and density. Last year 7,103 short films from 136 countries were entered, with 64 films were officially selected into international competition.
In addition, each PLAYGROUND presents National Jury and Audience Awards, in a CLOSING NIGHT ceremony held one week before the FINALE in each PLAYGROUND city.
