Story telling has been in the fore front of celebrating our culture and heritage as Africans, Our fore fathers used storytelling to convey a message with enlightening and encouraging messages as well as to tackle subjects which were deemed taboo in our communities. Our forefathers used storytelling to tactically tackle such issues. It is for this reason that Sollywood is organising Ugu Film Festival to exploit our heritage as well as culture to convey messages to the youth using films that tell stories of our history as the Zulu Nation and the massacres that happened in Ugu District. The Film Festival is also creating a platform to celebrate our heritage through films and commemorate our cultural heroes like King Shaka Zulu, Amakhosi and izinduna about their roles and relevance in our societies in the modern world. Ugu District is rich with cultural and political untold stories for example Bhambatha Rebellion where Ntelezi Msani from Umzumbe was arrested and executed in St Helena Island. These stories remain untold and young people are encouraged to pass these stories from generation to generation through films while creating employment for their communities.

Funded by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) Ugu Film Festival is a brain child of Senzo Zindela, a young man from Ezinqoleni who has travelled the world, learning, gathering and forming relationships with Hollywood Film Experts. Senzo throughout the years has made it his mission to share his acquired knowledge in the Ugu Film Festival which this year is scheduled to take place from the 10th to the 13thSeptember at Umthunzi Hotel in Umtentweni and nearest rural communities as part of youth empowerment and upliftment for those communities. This year's Film Festival has also initiated to heal the community affected by the Kwashobashobane massacre that occurred on Christmas Day at Ezinqoleni in December 1995, where hundreds of people were injured and 19 brutally murdered. These communities feel as if they have been forgotten, Sollywood through Ugu Film Festival initiative aims to unite and create a platform for youth to exploit their creativity to address social ills and youth unemployment.

The Ugu Film Festival is a three day film extravaganza consists of the screenings of locally produced films about KZN heritage, Business Breakfast where local film makers will be afforded an opportunity to present their companies & films to potential investors and closes on high note with an awards ceremony to encourage & reward local upcoming or classic international films. This year the Film Festival is hosting Dexter Davis (Hollywood Film Producer & Distributer)Xolile Tshabalala South Africa's leading actress who will be conducting informative workshops to equip disadvantaged communities.
