Ningbo to join the construction of world-cla airport cluster of Yangtze River Delta

News came from the National Development and Reform Commission that the commission and the National Civil Aviation Administration have recently issued the "national civil transportation airports layout planning". According to the planning, by 2020, there will be 260 transportation airports in China, a series of major projects, such as the new airport in Beijing and the new airport in Chengdu, will be completed and put into use, the facilities of the hub airports will be improved, and a group of extension airports will be put into use.

The planning points out that a lot of problems remain to be solved in the domestic civil transportation airport construction, such as the inadequate coverage of transportation airports, the underdeveloped system structure and the backward support capacity. To be specific, the coverage problem mainly exists in the central and western area, especially some remote areas and the minority regions. Meanwhile, the structure of the existing airports is not clear and the functional structure needs improving. In addition, some airports are now operation at full capacity and the existing facilities can not meet the new demands, which often leads to the resource shortage and flight delays.

The planning shows that by 2025, a modern airport system featuring broad coverage, reasonable distribution, complete functions and environment-friendly intensity, with three world-class airport clusters, ten international hubs and 29 regional hubs. Then by 2030, the airport layout will be further improved, with the expanded coverage and ever-improving services.

According to the planning, currently, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou have manifested their status as the international airport hubs, as the annual passenger throughput of Beijing Capital Airport ranks No. 2 in the world, and the annual commodity throughput of Shanghai Pudong Airport ranks No. 3 in the world.

The planning also points out that the six airport clusters in the north, the northeast, the east, the central south, the southwest and the northwest ofChinawill be improved. By 2025, in addition to the existing airports (including those under construction now), there will be 136 new airports, and there will be 370 civil transportation airports.

Specifically speaking, the north, east and central south areas will be the major battlefield for the world-class airport clusters. Beijing will join hands with Tianjin and Shijiazhuang to build a world-class airport cluster in the north. Shanghai will co-build the airport cluster of the Yangtze River Delta area with Hangzhou, Nanjing, Hefei and Ningbo, and form a complementary system with other means of transport in the area. In the Pearl River Delta area, Guangzhou and Shenzhen will make joint efforts to share resources and improve their competitiveness as an international airport hub.
