Spotlight Wins Best Picture; the Revenant & Mad Max Have Big Night

HOLLYWOOD - The 88th annual Academy Awards took place last night, honoring the best in the film community. The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road both came into the competition with the most nominations and both did well. The Revenant took home three Oscars, winning in the Leading Actor, Director and Cinematography categories.

Leonardo DiCaprio won his first award for his leading role. Director Alejandro G. I rritu took home the category's Oscar, following the success he had last year with Birdman, which won 2014's Best Picture, Director, and Writing. And Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki won his third in a row, following 2013's Gravity and 2014's Birdman.

Mad Max: Fury Road also had a big night, winning top honors for Costume Design (Jenny Beavan), Film Editing (Margaret Sixel), Makeup and Hairstyling (Lesley Vanderwalt, Elka Wardega and Damian Martin), Production Design (Colin Gibson, Lisa Thompson), Sound Editing (Mark Mangini, David White), and Sound Mixing (Chris Jenkins, Gregg Rudloff and Ben Osmo).

But while The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road led in nominations, the Best Picture Oscar went to Spotlight (Michael Sugar, Steve Golin, Nicole Rocklin & Blye Pagon Faust), a film about investigative reporting, scandal and cover up inside the Catholic church.

Inside Out (Pete Docter, Jonas Rivera) was the winner in the Animated Feature category, and Ex Machina (Andrew Whitehurst, Paul Norris, Mark Ardington and Sara Bennett) took home the Visual Effects Oscar, winning in a very competitive category that also include Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Mad Max: Fury Road.
