Op-Ed: Preparing for Agentic AI in Live Sports

30/03/2026

The economics of live sports streaming have changed. New rights models, cloud production tools, and lower-cost distribution have made it possible for high schools, colleges, and niche sports to reach global audiences. But with that opportunity comes pressure: more games to cover, more venues to support, more platforms to support with even more content and higher expectations for broadcast-quality results.

Most programs are not scaling their crews at the same rate as their production demands. They rely on small production teams with limited setup time. That gap between expectations and resources is exactly where agentic AI becomes relevant. And this is no longer a distant concept, but a practical layer of workflow automation that helps teams deliver more consistent outcomes.

What agentic AI actually means for live sports production

In the context of the needs for live sports video production, agentic AI should be understood as systems that can perceive, maintain context, and take goal-oriented actions in real time. Within boundaries defined by the production team.

This is not about replacing operators. It is about giving software the ability to assist in the same way a junior crew member would: watching, reacting, and handling repeatable tasks with consistency.

Crucially, agentic systems need a way to act. In live production, that act layer is physical and connected. PTZ cameras, control systems, and production software become the execution layer for AI-driven decisions.

From intelligent cameras to intelligent workflows

For years, the industry has talked about smart cameras. What is emerging now is something more useful: intelligent workflows where cameras, data, and control systems work together. The shift is subtle but important: from isolated features to coordinated systems that perceive, decide, and act across the entire production environment.

In practical terms, this looks like:

Context-aware camera control: Cameras that adjust framing and switching based on logic derived from game context to leverage PTZ presets, zoom logic, and positioning rules tied to gameplay.

Scoreboard-driven production triggers: Systems that treat the scoreboard and clock as live data inputs, triggering replay markers, graphics prompts, or camera repositioning automatically.

AI-assisted replay and metadata tagging: Key moments are identified and tagged in real time, making replay workflows faster and more accessible for small crews and coaching staff.

Next-best-action assistance with execution readiness: Systems that not only suggest what to do next, but understand the state of game to pre-position cameras or prepare shots so operators can act instantly.

When combined with AI systems, PTZ cameras move beyond simple remote operation. They become responsive tools that can execute decisions in real time by adjusting framing, switching context, and maintaining coverage without constant manual input.

This is where camera control integration becomes critical. Agentic AI allows for state-aware decision making across systems - but standardized presets, naming conventions, and control protocols are what allow AI systems to act reliably. Without that foundation, automation breaks down. Humans still define the rules, confidence thresholds, and when the system can act versus when it should only suggest.

Network-connected robotic cameras and centralized control can also change the math. When venues have installed cameras and consistent presets, teams can reduce repeated setup work and improve repeatability across games. Over a season, that translates into fewer last-minute scrambles, less gear movement, and more time spent on what matters, which is producing a show that fans want to watch.

The proving ground: college and high school sports

At the highest levels of professional sports, large crews and deeply optimized workflows already exist. The most immediate impact of agentic AI will be felt further down the ecosystem. College programs, D2/D3 athletics, and high schools need to cover more events with fewer resources and manage multiple venues simultaneously, all while training the next generation of production professionals.

These environments benefit most from systems that make small crews more capable. And many sports production teams are already moving in this direction by combining PTZ camera deployments, auto-tracking, and data-aware workflows to create more repeatable, scalable production models.

The goal is not full automation. The goal is to make smaller crews feel bigger, create more content and have that content become more dynamic.

Enhancement, not replacement

Any conversation about agentic AI has to address workforce anxiety head-on. Media production is a deeply human craft, and crews worry that automation means fewer opportunities. The more realistic and grounded near-term view is about enhancement. We should think about agentic AI as a force multiplier for small crews in need of:

An assistant technical director handling rule-based triggers and checklists

A junior replay operator creating markers, tags, and searchable moments

A camera operator maintaining consistent coverage across long schedules

Humans still own the work that defines quality: editorial judgment, creative storytelling, and final control. That matters in education-heavy environments too. Student crews learn faster when the basics are more consistent, and staff can focus on teaching storytelling instead of constantly managing mechanics. Importantly, this development enables student crews to learn the important lesson of how to understand and work alongside AI, rather than being replaced by it! The next cohort of production professionals are learning their craft today. They need to understand, and know how to get the best out of, the emerging technology shaping tomorrow's workflows.
