Documentary on F.W de Klerk to premiere at International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam

F.W. de Klerk was South Africas last white apartheid-era President. In less than four years he went from being Mandelas jailor to his deputy president. Together Mandela and de Klerk changed the face of South African history and warded off a potential civil war. Yet little is known about de Klerk. Through his probing lens, award-winning director Nicolas Rossier (American Radical) explores de Klerks fascinating political journey and examines the legacy of this complicated figure.

Three years in the making, THE OTHER MAN: FW DE KLERK AND THE END OF APARTHEID, will have its European premiere at this years International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA) in Amsterdam.

The story of de Klerk is also the story of South Africa. Its oppressive history and stunning transformation continues to inform the countrys social and political identity in very real and tangible ways and its effects can be felt on an international scale.

The film features in-depth, exclusive interviews with de Klerk himself, Thabo Mbeki (former president of SA), Roelf Meyer, Leon Wessels (former minister of the De Klerk cabinet), Albie Sachs (anti-apartheid activist and former judge on the Constitutional Court of South Africa), Mathews Phosa (former ANC Treasurer General and former anti-apartheid activist), Yasmin Sooka (former commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission), Richard Goldstone (headed the Goldstone Commission investigations into political violence in S.A.), Randall Robinson (author and founder of TransAfrica), Chester Crocker (former Reagan Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs) and many others who played a vital role in pre- and post-apartheid South Africa.

The film is a US/South Africa co-production between Rossiers New York-based Baraka Productions and Naashon Zalk Media, a Cape Town-based production company, in collaboration with Emmy Award winning filmmakers Jon Alpert and Matthew ONeill from Downtown Community Television in New York.

The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) is the worlds biggest documentary film festival and one of the worlds most prestigious. It is held each fall in Amsterdam, Holland.
