TORONTO (June 17, 2013) City asks its audiences to join them on Friday, June 21 to help create a world of difference during the 8th annual Herbie Day celebration in Yonge-Dundas Square. Founded in 1979,the Herbie Fund helps children from around the world receive life-altering and life-saving surgeries at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Live coverage of Herbie Day festivities begins at 7 a.m.ET on Breakfast Television,continues on CityNews at Five at 5 p.m. ET, and wraps up with the grand total of donations at CityNews at Six at 6 p.m.ET with anchor Gord Martineau.

As part of Herbie Day activities in Yonge-Dundas Square, City viewers can enjoy food, performances from pop-rock singing sensation Suzie McNeil and Canada's beat boxing champion KRNFX, and have a chance to meet favourite City on-air personalities. Viewers will also have the chance to enter to win amazing raffle prizes - including a trip for two to any KLM Royal Dutch Airlines North American destination and a gift card for $5,000 at any Cadillac Fairview shopping centre.

City has a long history supporting the Herbie Fund and CityNews anchor Gord Martineau currently serves as the foundation's Goodwill Ambassador. Over the past decade, Martineau has travelled around the globe to tell the stories of young patients who - through the Herbie Fund - have received life-altering and life-saving operations at The Hospital for Sick Children.

Beginning Monday, June 17, CityNews at Six will broadcast a special five-part series chronicling Martineau's recent travels to the Philippines, where he met with current and former patients who received life-altering and life-saving surgeries at SickKids, made possible by the Herbie Fund. Viewers will hear inspiring stories from such patients as Marianne Banglos, who as a child had four holes in her heart and a 110 degree curvature of her spine crushing her heart and lungs when she was brought to SickKids. She is now approaching her 18th birthday and hopes to study nursing. Other inspiring stories include: a seven year-old boy from Poland now able to walk without pain for the first time in his life, two seven year-old boys from the Philippines who faced certain death, and three two year-old children from Mongolia with life-threatening conditions, who are all back home and healthy after successful surgeries.

An increasing number of sick children from around the world and their families look to the Herbie Fund (www.herbiefund.com) at SickKids to provide treatment not available in their homeland. Over 684 children from 102 countries have received specialized medical and surgical help that would not otherwise be available to them. The Herbie Fund helps approximately 25-30 children every year.
