Pop Audio transforms audio filtering with Cambridge Industrial Design

Stylish new audio filtering equipment designed in the UK is making the recording experience easier, faster and better. Pop filters are used to eliminate popping sounds when recording the human voice, as well as protecting against saliva damaging the microphone. Pop Audios new pop filter, designed by Cambridge Industrial Design (CID), is a radically improved version of the traditional filter. It has been designed to overcome the issues of drooping filters, which hinder the recording process and require time-consuming, constant adjustment. It also improves acoustic performance through a range of new filters created for specific recording needs.

Pop Audio is the brainchild of audio recording engineers Jonathan Hucks and John Metcalfe. Frustrated by the poor performance of existing pop filters they came up with the idea of replacing the standard neck with a more stable, adjustable ball and socket arm, dramatically improving usability and quality.

Pop Audios product comes complete with a quick release clamp, a heavy-duty adjustable arm and a range of interchangeable metal, foam and fabric filters, designed to meet specific needs. The arms quick release clamp, developed in conjunction with CID, dramatically reduces set up time as users can just clip it straight on to a microphone stand and record, no longer wasting valuable studio time tightening a screw. The arms removable filter attachment point also enables filters to be screwed directly onto a microphone stand.

After raising initial funding, Pop Audio met multiple design companies to discuss its idea, and chose to work with CID due to its combination of audio experience, flexible, teamwork-based approach and end to end services. Not only did CID create the product design, but it has also provided access to its manufacturing partners in the Far East, delivering a full service to Pop Audio. CIDs previous audio and studio experience includes projects for Fender, Monitor Audio and Wharfedale Pro Audio.
