1 in 3 to turn to online viewing following disappointing' festive TV schedule

Due to disappointing' TV listings, 30 per cent of Brits will be turning to online streaming services such as LOVEFiLM to bolster the film and TV offering from traditional channels this Christmas, according to new research released today.

The study of over 1,000 people commissioned by Amazon's film and TV streaming service LOVEFiLM reveals that an abundance of repeats and lack of variety on traditional channels are driving viewers to tune in to their favourite content using video on demand platforms.

Indeed as this year's festive listings will see 290 hours of repeats in just one week across BBC1, BBC2, ITV1 and Channel 41, 70 per cent of those surveyed bemoaned the lack of variety, while 42 per cent described the festive TV schedule as disappointing'.

Additionally, just under half of respondents (46 per cent) expressed relief at having access to streaming services which enable them to watch their favourite films and shows at their leisure over the festive break.

In the extreme a third (33 per cent) felt that their video on demand subscription was better value than their TV license, while nearly one in five (17 per cent) will be rejecting traditional TV completely in favour of online streaming services.

LOVEFiLM is anticipating a very busy film and TV streaming period this Christmas as Brits unwrap tech gifts featuring video on demand apps such as the new PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, of which 180,000 and 150,000 consoles respectively were sold during the first week of availability.2
