Con el objetivo de mejorar las experiencias de OTT (over-the-top), Akamai ha desarrollado la tecnolog a Media Acceleration que constituye un hito muy significativo en la evoluci n de las capacidades de distribuci n de contenido de Akamai, que evoluciona hacia un enfoque centrado en el consumidor para la distribuci n de v deos y software online. La tecnolog a se integra directamente en las aplicaciones de consumo para optimizar la experiencia de cada usuario individual.
Los operadores de OTT pueden aprovechar una comunicaci n m s eficaz entre los dispositivos de los consumidores y la red de Akamai para proporcionar v deos que se ajusten perfectamente a las capacidades del dispositivo, al tipo de red y a las condiciones de los usuarios finales espec ficos. Media Acceleration ha superado muchos de los retos principales de la distribuci n de v deos online y puede ayudar a los operadores de OTT a proporcionar una experiencia previsible y de alta calidad constante de las retransmisiones tradicionales a la que los clientes est n acostumbrados.

Vimeo, una de las principales plataformas online del mundo para compartir v deos y de entretenimiento, ha percibido las mejoras inmediatas en la experiencia de sus espectadores tras la implantaci n de Akamai Media Acceleration.
Naren Venkataraman, vicepresidente de ingenier a de Vimeo, subraya que poco despu s de trasladar el tr fico a Media Acceleration, Vimeo observ una experiencia de mayor calidad de v deo para nuestros espectadores; que sobre todo se hizo notar debido al aumento considerable de las reproducciones en calidad HD. Dado que los creadores de v deos suponen una gran parte de nuestra cartera de clientes, es de vital importancia ofrecer una gran calidad de v deo y una experiencia acorde para mantener la reputaci n de la marca .
Como parte de sus optimizaciones de distribuci n basadas en UDP, dise adas para maximizar el rendimiento de los v deos a escala mundial, Akamai aprovecha los est ndares emergentes, como Conexiones UDP r pidas en Internet (QUIC), para contribuir a la adopci n Media Acceleration por parte de los clientes. Las funciones pueden incrementar la velocidad, la calidad y la homogeneidad con las que se distribuye el contenido a trav s de una Internet abierta, y mitigar la degradaci n que con frecuencia se produce en la ltima milla de la red; incluso en el hogar.
Scott Brown, vicepresidente de gesti n de productos de medios de Akamai, destaca que en la actualidad, la distribuci n de televisi n tradicional presenta caracter sticas comerciales y operativas fundamentales muy diferentes de las de la distribuci n de v deos a trav s de Internet.
