On Tuesday 6 September, Spotify announced Zambian-born rapper and poet Sampa The Great as the EQUAL Africa artist for September. The programme assists African-based female artists with the resources they'll need on their music journey and addressed the gender imbalance that affects them.

WHO IS SAMPA THE GREAT? Sampa Tembo, better known as Sampa The Great, was raised born in Zambia and raised in Botswana. She discovered her love for rap music after hearing 2Pac's legendary hit, Changes.

She started rapping as a young girl and relocated to Australia as an adult, rising to become a popular artist in Sydney.

Sampa the Great is a poet, songwriter and rapper who dabbles in the soul-jazz and hip-hop genres. The Zambian-born star has collaborated with the likes of US rapper Denzel Curry, Estelle and South African-based muso Moonga K.

SAMPA THE GREAT JOINS SPOTIFY'S EQUAL PROGRAMME Sampa The Great has been announced as Spotify's EQUAL Africa artist for September. She joins the likes of Sio, Ayra Starr, Somi an Mzansi's amapiano DBN Gogo.

Spotify is so excited to have Sampa The Great as our EQUAL Africa artist for September. She is a powerful artist who has a courageous, young mind and is determined to beat all odds stacked up against her, said Spotify's head of music for sub-Saharan Africa, Piona Okumu.

As a Zambian woman artist whose career started outside her country, it feels like a full circle moment to be able to relocate back home, said Sampa The Great.

Creating a whole album in Zambia and showcasing the range, of different genres and amazing art that's coming from the continent has been a big goal that I've infused into a new wave and genre called Hybrid music.

The talented artist released her new album, As Above, So Below on Friday 9 September. The album features the likes of Kojey Radical, Joey BadA$$, Denzel Curry and the legendary Ang lique Kidjo.
