Working Actor: Where You ve Seen Clark Gregg Before

As an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., character actor Clark Gregg is finally becoming a name to go with his recognizable face. With Joss Whedons Much Ado About Nothing opening this week, Gregg will once again be gracing us. But where else may you have seen him, before Thors hammer fell to Earth?

Youve Most Likely Seen Him In ...

...pretty much every Marvel movie made in the last five years. Greggs role as Avenger rounder-upper Agent Phil Coulson has taken him through Thor, two Iron Man movies, and into his big showcase in last summers insanely huge The Avengers. The increased Marvel-universe exposure has brought the classic character-actor into the big time, putting him alongside Samuel L. Jacksons Nick Fury as the glue that holds all those marquee names together.



Unless Youve Really Been Paying Attention, in Which Case You Remember Him From ...

... Any number of roles wherein he played the non-ideal husband. In The Adventures of Sebastian Cole, Gregg played the gender-transitioning stepfather of Adrian Greniers character. In Lovely & Amazing, he played Catherine Keeners (she ends up having an affair with Jake Gyllenhaal). On CBSs surprisingly long-running sitcom The New Adventures of Old Chrstine, Gregg played ex-husband to Julia Louis Dreyfuss titular Old Christine (he was married to New Christine).

"Wait, So Hes That Guy From ..."

... any episode of The West Wing where the FBI had to track some sniper down. For a scattered eight episodes, Gregg played Special Agent Casper, who always had to explain to the President about some kind of raid or manhunt or whatnot. He always did a good job and the President always told him so. It seemed like a good job to have.

... Oh, everything, really. Greggs been bouncing around the character-actor circuit forever. Hes usually playing mostly law-enforcement types (One Hour Photo), politicians (State and Main), or co-workers (500 Days of Summer; Magnolia).

... youve noticed he can do the actor/director thing as well. He had a pretty small part in his directorial debut, an adaptation of the Chuck Palahniuk novel Choke. For his next film, however, he stepped into the leading role, with the Hollywood satire Trust Me, which made its world premiere at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival.

...Hes playing the role of Leonato, father to a slandered daughter, in Joss Whedons stylish adaptation of Shakespeares Much Ado About Nothing. Also, if youre patient enough to wait until the fall, youll be able to witness the triumphant return of Agent Coulson in ABCs new TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Not even death can keep a Clark Gregg character down.
