enewBlank Creates Film Titles For Indie Feature Big In Japan

Design and production company thenewBlank rocked the title sequence for the feature film BIG IN JAPAN, which screens at the Seattle Film Festival on June 5. thenewBlank creative team joined forces with longtime friend director Jeff Jeffcoat to produce the high-energy titles that blend signature performance footage of Tennis Pro and highly stylized motion graphics.

The opening title sequence was developed to make the band appear like larger-than-life rock gods, but when we pull wide the humor of the movie is augmented by the reveal of a small, empty venue, says thenewBlank ECD Bobby Hougham. That rock god sequence was inspired by laser and high-end light displays as well as the colors found in some of the film's Tokyo montages. Bringing aspects of the whole film into the opening sequence makes it feel like a true introduction.

In BIG IN JAPAN, which premiered at SXSW and is making festival rounds, things are looking bleak for the members of rock band Tennis Pro. They've been struggling to connect to an audience in the Seattle music scene, with a recent run of shows drawing sparse crowds and uninspiring day jobs that are quickly eclipsing their dreams. So when an opportunity arises to take their act on the road to Japan where the allure of a second chance at recognition awaits them they can't refuse. Embarking on their Tokyo musical odyssey, the guys experience all the thrills and setbacks of taking their music into unknown territory (at least to them) and in the process learn a thing or two about themselves. Director John Jeffcoat utilizes a fresh narrative approach and guerrilla production style, with music and film intersecting with two cultures to reveal simple, oftentimes hilarious, universal truths. Jeffcoat is also a frequent collaborator with thenewBlank, having shot and edited a number of projects for the company.

Working with Bobby and the team at thenewBlank was an absolute pleasure, comments director John Jeffcoat. I was very impressed with the thoughtfulness that went into the concepts they pitched us for the title credits, taking my initial idea and expanding it beyond what I could have imagined yet staying completely true to the film and its story.
