Alix Milan, founder and Managing Director of I Love Hue Ltd, is the latest in a growing number of broadcast production creatives investing in Leaders LV5333 3G/HD/SD-SDI waveform monitor via European reseller Thameside TV. I Love Hue specialises in providing digital imaging and colour workflow services for feature films and commercials. The LV5333 is being deployed across wide range of activities including feature production, music videos and commercials.
Many of my clients insist on having Leader test equipment on set. Alix Milan comments. I have been using LV5330 instruments for a long time and chose the LV3333 to handle the increasing demand for high dynamic range. 3G compatibility was also an important requirement.
The ability to isolate and inspect specific areas of the image is specially useful when we are lighting for green-screen or blue-screen chromakey. With the LV5333, we can see very precisely where the lighting hotspots are and how they affect the overall superimposition. It saves a lot of time and delivers the best keys we could possible have.
Leaders CINEZONE false-colour function is also extremely useful for showing how a scene is lit in general. It is very easy to read when we are lighting skin tones and backgrounds, showing whether the fill and keylights are providing enough punch or too much.
For scenes where there is not a lot of light, the LV5333 enables us quickly to set a minimum value below which anything becomes black so we can see exactly where in the image we need to put extra light. All my colleagues who have used it have also been very impressed. CINEZONE makes lighting analysis so much easier that I dont know how we ever managed without it.
HDR will quite obviously play a major role in the evolution of broadcast television standards, whether for HD, UHD or Hi-Vision, adds Leaders European Regional Development Manager, Kevin Salvidge. It enables programme producers to deliver images with extremely high impact across the full range of contrast depth from highlights to deep-shade detail. The LV3333 allows producers to capture the full available dynamic range right during the original shoot rather than having to boost the bright and dark regions during post production.
Compatible with over 20 HD-SDI/SD-SDI formats, the Leader LV5333 is designed for deployment in studios or technical areas, or attached to a camera tripod. The integral 6.5 inch XGA TFT LCD screen can also be used to display video signal waveform, vectorscope or the video image. CINELITE, CINEZONE, histogram, gamma display, gamut and level error display functions are included as standard.

Additional features of the LV5333 include cable length display, external timing display and field frequency deviation display. SDI-embedded audio can be extracted and two user-selectable audio channels sent as an AES/EBU stream to a BNC output. The levels of up to eight audio channels can be checked using on-screen bar displays. User-configurable multi-display combinations within the LV5333 allow easy inspection of of signal parameters. Full-screen displays can alternatively be selected to allow detailed review of specific elements.
The LV5333 occupies a 215 x 128 x 63 mm housing and weighs 1.3 kg. It can be powered from battery or a universal mains adapter.
The recently introduced LV5333SER02 HDR option enables the LV5333 to measure HD HDR and 2SI 4K in ITU.BT.2100 Hybrid Log Gamma, Dolby PQ or Sony Slog-3 protocols. The CINEZONE option for the LV5333 supports false colour display in each of these HDR protocols. In addition, the waveform display now supports PQ scales of 4000, 1000, 400 and 100 cd/m , as well as 800% and 500% for HLG.

Founder Alix Milan started his career at a large London post-production house before transitioning his skillset to include on-set data management before expanding into a more hands-on role for the majority of his clients. His recent work includes SOLO: A Star Wars Story (directed by Ron Howard and lensed by Bradford Young working closely with splinter unit DP Jeff Kim and Gaffer Jamie Mills), and Farming (directed by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and lensed by Kit Fraser). Having just released 100 Bullets: Dead Ghosts, his first major online series as post-producer, Alix Milan hopes to continue this upward trajectory well into the next decade with more work both on-set and off- set advising on both colour and workflow for major motion pictures.
